Position Summary

The Clinical Pathology Medical Laboratory Professional serves as a key diagnostic testing resource within the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories, providing independent laboratory testing, operational support, and staffing coverage to ensure continuity of services. This position performs a wide range of clinical pathology assays, supports quality and compliance initiatives, and responds to routine, urgent, and emergency diagnostic needs. The role exists to maintain uninterrupted laboratory operations and deliver accurate, timely diagnostic results that support animal health, disease detection, and veterinary medical decision-making.


The position is full-time with a schedule based on section needs. This position may be required to work one weekend (Saturday or Sunday) day per week (ex – Sunday through Wednesday or Sunday through Thursday shift). This position may require after-hours and weekend work, based on caseload and urgent testing or laboratory needs. This is an essential position, and the employee may be required to report to work, without delay, on some weather closure days and various holidays throughout the year. This position will be required to report to work for emergency disease response requests and may be required to work significant hours (exceeding 40 hours per week) during a disease outbreak detection and response effort or other important diagnostic effort.

The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Work independently and reliably as a Clinical Pathology Laboratory Medical Professional, ensuring operational and testing excellence for the section. Ensure all diagnostic testing is performed accurately, according to quality and testing procedures, and is kept up to date based on diagnostic test advancements.
  • Independently perform the full scope of routine and non-routine tests and procedures in the section, including chemistry analysis, complete blood counts, urinalysis, fluid analysis and other assays, and ensure client results are accurately reported, and all turnaround times are met.
  • Provide back-up for other Clinical Pathology Laboratory Medical Professionals for on-call coverage and shift coverage due to last-minute staff absences.
  • Serve as a positive role model in work performance and practices, including completing testing without delay, minimizing non-work-related activities, ensuring completion of tasks in a timely manner.
  • Review assigned standard operating procedures and ensure that departures from the quality system are documented and appropriately managed.
  • Provide exceptional client services to all clients, including minimizing operational and testing issues and appropriately resolving client complaints.
  • Provide essential services, including reporting to work, without delay, on some weather closure days and various holidays throughout the year, responding to various emergency testing and project needs.
  • Manage laboratory equipment and operations, as assigned.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Eligible for or certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).
  • Valid Driver’s License - Must possess or obtain a valid driver’s license by the employment start date and maintain such in good standing for duration of active employment.
  • Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
  • Shift Work - CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory does not follow standard University Holiday Schedule due to the nature of the business. Work on holidays, weekends and evenings is required as needed.
  • On-call Status - In the event of an emergency declared by the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Director, as needed, overtime work or work outside normal operating hours will be required.
  • Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials - Exposure to formalin & formalin-fixed tissues. This position handles samples that may contain infectious agents and must follow PPE guidelines and appropriate standard operating procedures.
  • Special Requirements/Other - Must safely lift and carry items that weigh up to 50lbs.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date. The department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position now or in the future.

Supervision:

No formal supervisory responsibilities.


Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in microbiology, medical technology, or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with clinical pathology diagnostic assays.
  • Demonstrate clear and concise communication skills and attention to detail as evidenced from applicant’s written materials.
  • Demonstrated use of medical terminology.

Salary Range

$50,000 - $55,000
