Are you looking to kickstart your career as a Journey Water Pipefitter? Look no further than this opportunity to join Colorado Springs Utilities as a Water Pipefitter Apprentice! Throughout this four-year Department of Labor (DOL)-registered apprenticeship, you'll develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become a Water Pipefitter through a combination of both classroom instruction and hands-on learning.
As this position is part of a DOL-registered Water Pipefitter Apprenticeship, the pay rate begins at $30.25 and will progress throughout the duration of the apprenticeship based on the pay schedule below (subject to change):
- Step 1 - $30.25/hr. (1st year)
- Step 2 - $31.51/hr. (1st year)
- Step 3 - $33.19/hr. (2nd year)
- Step 4 - $34.87/hr. (2nd year)
- Step 5 - $38.23/hr. (3rd year)
- Step 6 - $39.07/hr. (3rd year)
- Step 7 - $39.91/hr. (4th year)
- Step 8 - $40.75/hr. (4th year)
- Journey Level Turnout - $42.01/hr.
Throughout the apprenticeship, you will...
- Learn to and help operate construction equipment to expose existing water piping or install new water piping
- Learn to locate underground water pipelines and utilities
- Learn to and assist with the installation of water mains and service lines
- Inspect the condition of existing water pipes for cathodic protection
- Learn to operate leak detection equipment as well as identify the location of leaks and classify leaks
- Learn to tap low and high pressure water pipelines
- Inform customers of scheduled water work
- Respond to emergency situations involving water mains and service lines
- Learn and maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and safety procedures
- Learn and assist with performing maintenance on equipment and vehicles, including leak detection devices, stopping and tapping equipment, heavy equipment, and hand/power tools
Who You Are
- Experience in a skilled trade or skilled labor capacity is valued - this could be completion of or participation in a previous apprenticeship, construction, manual labor, etc.
- Possession of a valid, unrestricted Driver’s License is required - this position requires operating Colorado Springs Utilities' vehicles
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 12 months, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required
- Possession of a High School Diploma or GED is required - the U.S. Department of Labor requires possession of either to participate in a registered apprenticeship program
- Successful candidates will be self-directed and motivated to advance through the program by obtaining required knowledge, on-the-job training, scheduling evaluations, and passing written testing requirements
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Exerts in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Heavy Work. Positions in this class typically require exposure in all weather conditions.
