Director of State Government Relations

Shape Public Policy. Build Relationships. Make an Impact.

The Colorado Bankers Association (CBA) is seeking an experienced, strategic, and relationship-driven Director of State Government Relations to lead our state advocacy efforts and represent Colorado's banking industry before the Colorado General Assembly, state agencies, and key policymakers.

This is an exciting opportunity for a government affairs professional who enjoys working at the intersection of policy, politics, and business. As a trusted advisor to CBA leadership and member banks, you will help shape legislation, influence public policy, build meaningful relationships, and serve as the voice of Colorado's banking industry at the State Capitol.

Reporting directly to the President & CEO, this highly visible leadership position works closely with our Board of Directors, Government Relations Committees, member banks, elected officials, regulators, and coalition partners to advance policies that strengthen Colorado's financial services industry and the communities it serves.

What You'll Do

Lead State Advocacy

  • Develop and execute CBA's legislative and regulatory strategy.
  • Monitor, analyze, and communicate state legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Represent CBA before the Colorado General Assembly, executive agencies, and regulatory bodies.
  • Advocate directly with legislators, regulators, and other policymakers on issues affecting the banking industry.
  • Prepare and deliver legislative testimony, comment letters, issue briefs, and policy recommendations.

Build Relationships

  • Develop and maintain strong bipartisan relationships with legislators, legislative staff, executive branch officials, regulators, coalition partners, and industry stakeholders.
  • Serve as CBA's primary representative at the Colorado State Capitol.
  • Coordinate advocacy efforts with CBA's contract lobbyists and strategic partners.
  • Organize meetings between policymakers and CBA leadership.

Advise and Communicate

  • Keep CBA leadership, Board members, committees, and member banks informed on legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Develop advocacy materials including talking points, testimony, fact sheets, policy briefs, regulatory comments, and educational resources.
  • Partner with CBA's communications team to create member alerts, social media content, and advocacy campaigns.

Advance Member Engagement

  • Help educate and mobilize member banks on key legislative priorities.
  • Build coalitions and strengthen grassroots advocacy efforts.
  • Manage and grow CBA's political action committees (PACs), ensuring compliance with all reporting requirements.
  • Support member events, legislative programs, and advocacy initiatives throughout the year.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is equally comfortable discussing policy in a committee hearing, briefing senior executives, or building relationships over coffee. The ideal candidate is strategic, collaborative, politically savvy, and thrives in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift quickly.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience in government relations, lobbying, legislative affairs, public policy, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with state legislatures, government agencies, or elected officials.
  • Strong understanding of the legislative and regulatory process.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and public speaking skills.
  • Outstanding relationship-building abilities with individuals across the political spectrum.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated, collaborative, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience managing PACs or campaign finance compliance is a plus.
  • Experience in financial services, banking, or other regulated industries is helpful but not required.

Why Join CBA?

At the Colorado Bankers Association, you'll have the opportunity to influence meaningful public policy while working alongside an engaged membership and a collaborative, mission-driven team. We value integrity, initiative, professionalism, and strong relationships—and we believe great advocacy starts with great people.
