POLICE OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION

1. Enforce state and local laws and ordinances equally to all persons regardless of age, sex. race, etc.

2. Patrol an assigned area during a specific period.

3. Check doors and windows and examine unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect suspicious conditions.

4. Investigate suspicious persons, conditions and complaints and arrest persons who violate laws and ordinances.

5. Transport prisoners to headquarters and if necessary to various court proceedings and appear in court as the arresting officer.

6. Direct traffic and perform traffic enforcement issuing citations or warnings to violators.

7. Respond to complaints, fires and or/accidents as directed, provide assistance to those in need and prepare all related reports from any incidents.

8. Maintain order in crowds, at parades and other public gatherings.

9. Remain constantly on alert observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing while on duty.

10. Provide general information on laws and ordinances to the public.

11. Assist stranded motorists.

12. Complete daily reports of all activities, and incidents and turn them into the supervisor at for approval by the end of the tour of duty.

13. Shall complete follow-up investigations as assigned.

14. Maintain and display a thorough knowledge and application of criminal statutes, Motor Vehicle Code, and ordinances including revisions and relevant court decisions affecting same.

15. Be sufficiently familiar with civil law to know the limitations of police authority in civil matters.

16. Communicate effectively and professionally with citizens,
Department personnel and employees and representatives of the
Criminal Justice System.

17. Exhibit calm and controlled composure in stress and non-stress encounters with co-workers, citizens and groups to resolve conflict and manage crisis.

18. Maintain an operational knowledge of all Department Orders,
Regulations, Policies, and Procedures.

19. Develop and maintain driving skills in the operation of Department vehicles in emergency and non-emergency situations consistent with applicable law and Departmental Policies, Rules, Regulations and Orders.

20. Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging and carrying people away from dangerous situations and securing and evacuating people from particular areas.

21. Affect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs, and other restraints. Subdue resisting suspects using the proper techniques.

2. This is very physically demanding and strenuous work under unusual or potentially hazardous conditions. Tasks may require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying of heavy loads.
Flexibility is important because of the need to enter and exit vehicle frequently, inspect buildings, climb over and around obstacles, suddenly move out of the way of dangers, etc.
Assignments may require standing or directing traffic for extended periods of time. Mental alertness is very important because of the need to make critical decisions concerning personnel and their operations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

2. The location of work performed by the employee is varied and is based on the development of leads, thus the work is performed whenever and where the leads may direct the investigation. The majority of the work is performed out of doors and the employee is frequently exposed to all types of weather and atmospheric conditions. The employee must occasionally visit and inspect locations that are accessible only by uneven paths of travel, ladders, and stairways. Work is primarily performed from a police vehicle however officers may be assigned to perform foot and bicycle patrol.

Pay: $77,758.00 - $88,126.00 per year
