Performs various tasks involving wastewater utility maintenance and repair within the Wastewater Collections Department.

Essential Functions

  • Performs semi-skilled manual labor work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of utilities collection, transmission, and distribution systems, including a variety of manual labor tasks.
  • Assists with valve maintenance activities; assists with vacuum truck operations to clean valves; maintains and catalogs blueprints in blueprint room; retrieves and reviews blueprints; responds to main breaks for shutdown; operates global positioning system (GPS) unit to collect data, download coordinates, and locate valves; assists in mapping water system; maps valves on blueprints; maintains valve data sheets; prepares shutdown for main breaks, service line breaks, or isolation, using mapping system; locates, operates, identifies, maintains, and documents all County valves; tags valves on roadways with curb markers; raises/lowers valve boxes; replaces damaged, defective, or outdated water valves; paints valve lids.
  • Assists with the maintenance of wastewater collection systems, lift stations, and sewer lines; ensures proper flow of sewer wastewater from homeowners to sewer wastewater treatment plants; uses global positioning system (GPS) unit to obtain coordinates of lift stations, valves, or other sites; maintains sewage pumping stations; troubleshoots electrical problems in panels; rewires electrical boards and floats; rehabilitates lift station panels; maintains master pumps, pulls pumps, and troubleshoots pump problems; rebuilds pumps from lift stations; repairs/replaces pumps and floats; repairs flat bracket in wells; places deodorant blocks or degreaser in wells; installs and maintains odor control units; locates, repairs, and maintains service laterals and gravity/force mains; installs new services; scrapes and cleans out wet wells, walls, and rails for pumps; repairs railing system for pumps; turns valves in dry wells; repairs broken valves and valve boxes; exercises valves; creates labeling system for valves; prepares valve identifications, valve pads, and valve poles; prepare valves for line repairs; restores roads, sidewalks, and other work sites to original condition after completion of work.
  • Responds to after-hours emergency calls when scheduled for on-call duty; coordinates repair of main/service breaks; evaluates service calls, and determines needed manpower, equipment, parts, and materials; determines need to request location of utility services; requests bacteria samples from laboratory.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with division projects.
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition.
  • Transports, loads, and unloads equipment and materials used in projects; transports crew workers to/from work sites.
  • Monitors inventory levels of supplies, parts, and materials; ensures availability of adequate supplies, tools, and materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials.
  • Assists with traffic control activities at work sites; ensures proper setup of safety cones, barricades, barrels, and road/warning signs; monitors flagging of traffic through/around work sites; provides direction to crew workers and equipment operators in maneuvering equipment within work sites.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Prepares, completes and/or receives various forms, reports, correspondence, checklists, work orders, valve isolation forms, valve maintenance forms, data recorder sheets, pump activity reports, lift station sheets, maintenance reports, charts, timecards, leave requests, or other documents.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other divisions, contractors, utility companies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED* required.
  • Five (5) months of related experience preferred.
  • Fingerprinting required.
  • General Educational Development (GEDs) must be issued by the American Council on Education through an approved GED Administrator. For Florida the approved GED Administrator would be the Florida Department of Education (public schools or adult education centers).

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License with any applicable endorsement(s) to drive a County vehicle as provided in CMA 5805.
  • Must possess a Wastewater Collections Level III certification within two (2) years of hire.

Supplemental information

Salary offers above the minimum pay grade may be considered based on qualifications.

Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The County’s Administrative Office will determine who will be required to work on an incident-by-incident basis.
