JOB PURPOSETo Be Determined
Under occasional supervision, provides reading instruction to students in small and large group settings using research-based strategies and best practices in teaching to improve their achievement levels. Works with colleagues to identify students who need instructional support in the area of reading through the RTI model. Reports to the Principal.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides a high level of skill in all aspects of instruction that accelerates the learning of struggling readers.
Administers assessments, analyzing data, and planning instruction from the assessment data.
Provides highly specialized reading instruction in which struggling readers thrive: instruction that is explicit, intensive, accelerated, and provides ample practice.
Monitors student progress in ways that inform teaching and motivate learners.
Makes available student materials that ensure students read at their instructional reading level throughout the school day.
Coordinates across instructional settings the instruction provided to struggling readers (e.g., intervention teacher collaborating with the social studies teacher).
Creates practices that motivate struggling readers and reward their progress.
Supports an environment in which all adults in the school know the struggling readers by name and collaborate in increasing their reading achievement.
Participate in on-going training to remain current in the field and continuously develop expertise in the teaching of struggling readers.
Partner with the school and district administrators, literacy coach, student assistance team members and other interventionists to:
a. Problem-solve interventions and assistance for struggling readers.
b. Bring about all that is needed to facilitate a school wide commitment to reach all struggling readers.
c. Motivate faculties to contribute to the school wide commitment to all students reading well
d. Engage in collegial conversations to discuss student assessments and recommendations for instruction
Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a Master's degree in education and experience in the early childhood or elementary classroom, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina teaching certificate. Must be willing to seek Read to Succeed endorsement by taking SDE approved courses. Must possess a valid state driver's license.
