WIC Health Professional Assistant

Position Summary

The Cole County Health Department is seeking candidates for a full-time Health Professional Assistant position in the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program. The WIC Health Professional Assistant provides administrative, clerical, and client support services for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program in accordance with Missouri WIC policies and procedures. This position assists with client eligibility screening, certification, data collection, anthropometric measurements, hemoglobin testing, appointment scheduling, and maintenance of confidential health records. The role supports nutrition services, breastfeeding promotion, and public health initiatives while delivering excellent customer service to families from diverse backgrounds.

Salary: $42,500 Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 7:15 a.m. – 5:15 p.m.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prescreen applicants and determine WIC program eligibility.
  • Obtain certification, immunization, and health information from clients.
  • Perform anthropometric measurements (height, weight) and hemoglobin testing.
  • Enter and maintain accurate client records in electronic databases.
  • Prepare, organize, and update patient files for state audits.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and follow up on client appointments.
  • Explain WIC eligibility requirements, participant rights, and program benefits.
  • Educate participants on benefit issuance and redemption procedures.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries regarding appointments and health services.
  • Refer participants to community, health, nutrition, and social service agencies.
  • Promote breastfeeding and provide support to breastfeeding families.
  • Maintain inventory of WIC forms and office supplies.
  • Participate in community outreach activities and staff training.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive medical and personal information.
  • Perform additional administrative and program-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Experience in clerical, administrative, or healthcare support roles preferred.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Accurate data entry and recordkeeping abilities.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to organize work, multitask, and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of office equipment including computers, scanners, copiers, and telephones.
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally and socioeconomically diverse populations.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new computer systems and software utilized by the department.
  • Basic interpersonal skills, including professional phone etiquette and the ability to interact with clients from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.

Work Environment

  • Office and public health clinic setting.
  • Frequent interaction with infants, children, and families.
  • Extended computer use and telephone communication.
  • Standing, bending, stooping, and occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional travel for training and meetings.
