Role Summary
This position is designed as a cross-functional support role within the sterile department. This role will require a dependable, adaptable technician capable of serving as operational backup across multiple sterile workflow positions as staffing needs arise. Team members in this role will be cross-trained in sterile inputting, filling, packaging, and shipping to help maintain adequate departmental coverage, workflow continuity, and turnaround performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Enter sterile compound prescriptions accurately into pharmacy system, ensuring all required clinical, dosing, patient, and provider information is complete, compliant, and aligned with Cody Drug SOPs prior to production.
- Review incoming sterile orders for completeness and appropriateness, including verifying formulation details, concentrations, quantities, beyond-use dating requirements, and special handling instructions before routing to pharmacists for clinical verification.
- Coordinate closely with pharmacists and providers to clarify incomplete, inconsistent, or non-standard sterile orders, ensuring discrepancies are resolved before prescriptions enter production.
- Apply correct prioritization flags in Pharmacy system (stat, time-sensitive, high-acuity) to support proper production sequencing and turnaround time commitments.
- Maintain accurate documentation within pharmacy systems and related workflow tools, including notes, formulation references, NDC/API selection support, and special compounding instructions.
- Support automation and workflow tools by ensuring prescription data, batching details, and routing information are entered correctly to prevent downstream production delays or errors.
- Communicate proactively with sterile compounding staff, pharmacists, shipping teams, and customer service regarding order status, clarifications, backorders, or potential delays impacting patient care or clinic expectations.
- Complete opening and closing duties related to sterile order intake systems, queues, and workstations, ensuring systems, documentation, and workflows are prepared for daily operations.
- Maintain clean, organized, and compliant workstations in accordance with pharmacy, sterile, and regulatory standards.
- Follow all Cody Drug SOPs related to order intake, documentation, labeling preparation, recordkeeping, and data integrity to support audit readiness and patient safety.
- Participate in progressive cross-training across sterile department functions, including inputting, filling, packaging, and shipping, with the expectation of becoming a reliable operational backup resource across the sterile workflow.
- Assist with departmental coverage needs and workflow balancing during staffing shortages, peak production periods, PTO coverage, or operational surges.
Qualifications
- Active Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification is required at the time of application and must remain active throughout employment.
- Registered Pharmacy Technician status where required by state law.
- Previous experience in retail, hospital, sterile, or compounding pharmacy preferred.
- Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain focus in a fast-paced, high-accuracy environment.
- Strong organizational skills, adaptability, and dependable communication.
- Willingness to learn multiple sterile workflow functions and operate as part of a highly collaborative production team.
