Who We're Looking For:
An Application Architect to provide enterprise-level support for application development tools and processes used across the Department of Transportation. This role ensures the quality, consistency, and reliability of development tools, offering technical guidance to development teams and collaborating with infrastructure and security teams. The architect researches industry best practices, evaluates emerging technologies, and leads tool-related initiatives to improve cost efficiency, quality, and predictability in the software development lifecycle.
The candidate will troubleshoot complex issues, create and maintain tool documentation, assist in establishing standards and procedures, and support developers through ticketing systems. This position requires strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and experience working independently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical support and guidance for software development tools and related processes.
Troubleshoot complex issues faced by developers using supported development tools.
Research and implement industry best practices to improve service quality and reduce costs.
Evaluate and integrate new development technologies and tools.
Develop and maintain documentation for installation, setup, standards, and tool usage.
Collaborate with infrastructure and security teams to ensure alignment of development tools and policies.
Lead development-tool projects, including tool upgrades, new implementations, and modernization initiatives.
Translate business requirements into technical specifications and design solutions for complex problems.
Perform advanced technical design and development using modern Java, identity management tools, and approved frameworks.
Manage priorities effectively while supporting multiple development teams and initiatives.
Required Experience & Skills
5 years professional experience with modern Java (11 ) and Spring Boot in full-stack development.
4 years hands-on architecture and design experience with distributed systems or enterprise platforms.
4–5 years experience with Java development tools, JavaScript development tools, GitHub or similar version control systems, and CI systems.
Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities across varied toolsets.
Experience supporting development tools or providing technical assistance via ticketing systems.
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage competing demands.
Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Experience leading development-tool upgrades or implementation projects.
Background working in large organizations or modernization efforts.
Familiarity with DevSecOps practices.
Team leadership or help-desk support experience.
