Position Summary

The Technician III is responsible for claim evaluations and conducts various testing activities and analysis on sample materials. This position communicates results effectively and reports meaningful, unbiased conclusions based on evaluations. The Technician III conducts activities in accordance with established laboratory practices and procedures and contributes to improvements in laboratory evaluation processes, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

This position also leads laboratory maintenance and equipment calibration and supports the training and development of new hires and junior technicians.

Essential Duties

Claims Evaluation

  • Lead claim evaluations to determine manufacturing and performance characteristics.
  • Conduct testing according to established protocols and provide accurate data.
  • Assist in making data-driven decisions regarding laboratory dispositions.
  • Review and continuously improve process flows based on field feedback.
  • Improve laboratory efficiency by monitoring claim volume and prioritizing work to meet laboratory evaluation metrics.
  • Develop strong practical knowledge of key product lines, laboratory evaluation processes, product specifications, and application instructions.
  • Assist with root cause analysis investigations and communicate findings in a clear, meaningful format.
  • Participate in problem-solving teams.
  • Build strong working relationships across departments, including warranty, field services, R&D, and manufacturing.
  • Develop familiarity with manufacturing processes for various products.
  • Apply quality fundamentals to laboratory evaluations and investigations.
  • Utilize knowledge of engineering and science fundamentals.

Laboratory Functionality & Maintenance

  • Lead laboratory maintenance and equipment calibration programs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and equipment calibration according to established schedules.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Learn and develop new test methods, SOPs, and JSAs.
  • Assist with organizing daily laboratory workflow.
  • Train, mentor, and provide guidance to new hires and junior technicians.
  • Plan and execute assigned projects while prioritizing tasks through effective time management.
  • Coordinate internal and external resources to meet project goals and timelines.

Safety

  • Ensure all activities are performed safely in accordance with established safety guidelines.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work area on a daily basis following 5S guidelines.
  • Complete required monthly safety training.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of Job Safety Analyses and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Champion laboratory safety activities and lead housekeeping efforts.
  • Maintain knowledge of safety precautions, health hazards, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

Qualifications Required

  • Associate’s Degree in a relevant technical field with 2 years of practical, industry-related experience; or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant technical field with 2 years of practical, industry-related experience preferred.
  • 2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing or R&D laboratory setting.
  • Experience with quality control, analytical testing, or product development within the roofing or construction materials industry is highly desirable.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Technical Skills

  • Entry to intermediate-level Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong knowledge of roofing products and installation instructions preferred.
  • Familiarity with product specifications, laboratory processes, and quality standards.
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and equipment.
  • Understanding of manufacturing, quality control, and product evaluation processes.

Travel Requirements

  • Approximately 5% travel.
