The Coconino County Attorney's Office is a public law office in Northern Arizona located in the heart of Flagstaff. We are a team of approximately 20 attorneys and 30 legal staff who are dedicated to the vigorous and fair prosecution of crime throughout Coconino County, protection of the rights of crime victims, and effective legal representation of the County and County special districts. The CCAO is one of largest law offices in Northern Arizona and sets the example at the State and National levels in vision and design for rural attorney offices.

Under general supervision performs paraprofessional legal work of moderate difficulty, assisting attorneys in case preparation and processing and assisting in the coordination of civil and criminal case activities from initial assignment to their conclusion; performs other work as assigned.

PARALEGAL I:

 TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only)

  • Assist attorneys and clients with case preparation for court proceedings
  • Research statutes, legal cases, and other sources for legal precedents and case applicability
  • Ensures compliance with criminal and civil procedures in accordance with state and federal statute
  • Maintains statutorily required confidentiality of case matters
  • Compiles, annotates, and indexes provisions of statutes, cases, and administrative decisions
  • Drafts legal documents
  • Preparing and filing documents with courts both electronically and physically
  • Gathers, reviews and verifies case documentation 
  • Preparation of subpoenas, monitoring and updating the case management system
  • Assists and attends court hearings, depositions, and meetings with attorney as needed 
  • Manage document transcription
  • Receipt and process emotionally traumatic and graphic material
  • Redaction of media and other materials for trial or disclosure
  • Develops and secures evidence and documentation
  • Assists attorneys in preparation for depositions or trials
  • Reviews investigative or court documents/media and extracts pertinent case information and prepares reports for attorneys
  • Calendar’s deadlines and hearing dates
  • Assistance with the creation of trial documents 
  • Assistance with scheduling witness interviews
  • Makes travel arrangements for witnesses 
  • Arranges for proper waiting location for witnesses, greet, support, and update all witnesses needed for trial
  • Set up equipment in court for trial
  • Organize and archive the documents related to completed and ongoing cases
  • Trains, monitors, schedules, oversees, or directly supervises and reviews the work of subordinate clerical and office employees
  • May run criminal history record checks and obtain felony conviction records for attorneys
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

PARALEGAL II:

 TYPICAL DUTIES:  (Illustrative only)

  • Performs the duties of Paralegal I 
  • Assists in the training of Paralegal I or other subordinate staff
  • Conducts research, investigates facts and assists in the development of legal arguments
  • Drafts complex legal documents such as contracts and pleadings. 
  • Proficient in database and systems usage

PARALEGAL III:

 TYPICAL DUTIES:  (Illustrative only)

  • Performs the duties of Paralegal I and II 
  • Participates in witness and victim interviews
  • Acts as a liaison between attorneys, courts, clients, witnesses, other agencies, and the public
  • Trains and monitors interns and temporary personnel in legal functions
  • Acts as a case management and database subject matter expert, training others on system usage and best practices
  • Provides input and recommendations for revisions to procedure manuals
  • Assists in the training of Paralegal I and II

Essential functions of the position include but not limited to: sitting; working with and around others; dealing with interruptions; repetitive motion (hand/wrist, elbow/shoulder) for computer work, filing; vision acuity (near/far) for computer work and filing; hearing and speech for ordinary conversations; finger dexterity for typing. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and push 75 pounds.

PARALEGAL I:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate Degree or Paralegal Certificate/License and two years paralegal experience with direct attorney support; OR any equivalent combination of experience and education that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

This position is non-exempt from overtime.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate Degree or Paralegal Certificate/License and three years paralegal experience with direct attorney support; OR any equivalent combination of experience and education that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior clerical experience in a legal office; prior records management experience; prior data-entry experience; possess a working knowledge of the criminal justice system and legal terminology; and proficiency in the use of Outlook, Word, and Excel.

The ideal candidate will have prior clerical experience in a legal office, excellent customer service skills and the ability to work effectively and efficiently in a diverse legal office setting.

This position is non-exempt from overtime.

Considerable knowledge of:

- Legal terminology and procedures

- Practices and procedures of legal research

- Rules of Court, Evidence, Discovery, Federal Privacy Act, Freedom of Information Act and other ordinances

- Techniques of writing briefs, opinions, reports, and other established document forms

- Business English


Skill in:

- Use of computer systems, software programs and other office machines

- Report preparation


Working knowledge of:

- Interviewing and eliciting information in legal investigations

- Researching statutes and records and summarizing pertinent findings

- Preparation of documents for use in legal proceedings


Ability to:

- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, clients, co-workers and the public

- Accurately maintain records and prepare reports

- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
