Position Information
The purpose of this classification is to provide supervision and counseling to offenders placed on court probation.
Probation Officers work Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. to supervise defendants sentenced to probation in accordance with state law and with the Department of Community Supervision's Misdemeanor Probation Oversight Unit rules, for a group of State Court Judges.
Note: Applicants must be able to provide written proof of education noted on application.
Probation Officer I: $24.42 - $39.07 (DOE)
Probation Officer II: $25.76 - $41.22 (DOE)
Essential Functions
Provides probationary supervision for a caseload of offenders (up to 250); reviews court records and court orders: determines obligations of offenders; explains conditions of probation and related programs and the consequences of probation violation; maintains regular communication with probationers and closes cases or discharges probationer from supervision per case time limit.
Formulates case plans for probationer and monitors compliance with payment of restitution/fines and fees; provides direction on identifying counseling services, community service, and training programs.
Schedules, prepares, and presents cases within mandated time limits; provides notification to probationer of upcoming hearings; identifies witnesses, victims, and other relevant individuals needed to appear in court; prepares and executes subpoenas, summonses, and other legal documents; provides testimony in court; conducts case related research; and makes recommendation for dispensation of cases.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Probation Officer I: Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Must have completed a standard two-year college course of study, 90 quarter hours, or 60 semester hours from an accredited institution or have four years of law enforcement experience as a certified peace officer or jurisdictional equivalent at the time of appointment.
Probation Officers II: Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Must have completed a standard two-year college course of study, 90 quarter hours, or 60 semester hours from an accredited institution or have four years of law enforcement experience as a certified peace officer or jurisdictional equivalent at the time of appointment supplemented by three years’ experience in probation supervision or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses and Certifications
May require a valid driver's license.
Physical Abilities
Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as violence, or rude/irate customers.
