Position Summary
The Reading Olympics Advisor coordinates and leads the elementary Reading Olympics program, fostering a love of reading, teamwork, and literacy engagement among students. The Advisor organizes practice sessions, collaborates with school staff and parents, prepares students for the annual competition, and ensures all program logistics are handled efficiently. There will be an advisor needed at each elementary school.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Recruit and encourage student participation in Reading Olympics for grades 3–5 (or district-designated grade levels).
- Develop a positive, inclusive reading community that motivates students of all reading levels.
- Organize and lead regular Reading Olympics practice sessions before, during, or after school.
- Teach students teamwork strategies, book discussion skills, and competition expectations.
- Coordinate book availability with the school library/media specialist.
- Maintain communication with participating students, families, teachers, and administration.
- Oversee registration for competitions and manage all required documentation.
- Serve as the school liaison with the county/district Reading Olympics program.
- Communicate to families about any event-day logistics in collaboration with the school.
- Supervise students during practices and at the competition event.
- Model and promote enthusiasm for reading, collaboration, and good sportsmanship.
- Ensure student safety and adherence to district policies at all times.
Qualifications
Required:
- Experience working with elementary-age students
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to supervise students in group settings
- Ability to collaborate with building staff, families, and administration
- Demonstrated commitment to literacy development and fostering a positive learning environment
Preferred/Recommended:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, library science, English, or related field
- Previous experience leading student activities or clubs
- Familiarity with children’s literature and/or Reading Olympics book lists
- Experience coordinating extracurricular programs or academic competitions
