CME Associates is seeking a Traffic Engineer to join our Traffic & Transportation group in East Brunswick, NJ. This role offers the opportunity to work on a diverse mix of traffic engineering projects for State, County, Municipal, and private-sector clients. The Traffic & Transportation team provides traffic analysis, design, study, and review services that directly support land development, infrastructure, and municipal initiatives throughout New Jersey.
The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with traffic analysis, traffic design, and transportation planning, along with a strong interest in reviewing traffic studies and serving as the municipal Traffic Engineer at Planning and Zoning Board meetings. This position offers a clear growth path, beginning with an estimated 75% production / 25% project management responsibility split, with advancement opportunities through increased project leadership, client-facing responsibilities, and the development of direct report staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform traffic analyses and studies, including traffic impact, capacity, safety, and operational evaluations using industry-standard software.
- Design traffic signals, intersections, signage, pavement markings, striping, and lighting in accordance with NJDOT, MUTCD, County, and local standards.
- Prepare transportation planning deliverables such as maintenance and protection of traffic (MPT) plans, detour and staging plans, and transportation management strategies.
- Develop technical reports, design documents, and permit applications to meet NJDOT, NJTA, AASHTO, MUTCD, and local agency requirements (NJDOT Access Permit experience a plus).
- Produce construction plans, technical specifications, and engineer’s estimates using AutoCAD and MicroStation (MicroStation required for NJDOT projects).
- Review traffic studies and represent Municipal Planning and Zoning Boards at public meetings as the Municipal Traffic Engineer.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, or a related field.
- New Jersey Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- 4 years of progressive experience in traffic engineering, including traffic analysis, traffic signal and intersection design, roadway safety analysis, traffic study preparation, and transportation planning.
- Proficiency with traffic analysis and modeling software such as Synchro, HCS, ITE Trip Generation and Parking Generation, Autodesk Vehicle Tracking, VISSIM, GuideSIGN, and Visual Lighting.
- Experience managing and mentoring junior staff and coordinating bid package preparation.
- Proficiency in CAD platforms including AutoCAD and MicroStation.
- Working knowledge of NJTA, NJDOT, MUTCD, AASHTO, NJ Title 39, and applicable local traffic engineering standards and guidelines.
- Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification preferred.
