In this role, you will lead field investigations to locate and safely expose underground utilities using Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) methods.
With over 30 years of experience, CFB provides civil engineering, land surveying, and utility coordination services across Florida. Our SUE team plays an important role in helping engineers and developers avoid costly utility conflicts by providing accurate underground utility data before construction begins.
Job Description:
As a SUE Crew Chief (SUE Technician III), you will lead field operations and support the accurate identification and documentation of underground utilities. Responsibilities include:
- Leading field investigations and overseeing daily SUE crew activities
- Using RF locating and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment to designate underground utilities
- Performing vacuum excavation test holes to safely expose buried utilities
- Leading tailgate safety meetings and preparing site-specific Job Hazard Analyses
- Setting up and implementing Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) signage
- Setting up and using land surveying equipment to document utility locations
- Reading and understanding blueprints, plans, and utility records
- Maintaining trucks, tools, and equipment to ensure safe and organized field operations
- Training and mentoring junior SUE technicians on proper locating and test hole techniques
- Communicating field findings and troubleshooting with project managers and team members
- Ensuring work follows ASCE 38-22 standards
Qualifications:
- 3–6 years of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) experience
- Experience using RF locating and GPR equipment
- Ability to operate vacuum excavation equipment
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and utility records
- Basic math skills and strong attention to detail
- Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Valid Florida driver’s license with acceptable driving record (required)
- RF and GPR locating certification preferred
- Land surveying experience preferred
- Spanish fluency is a plus
Work Environment & Schedule:
This is a full-time field position working Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overtime and occasional weekends as needed. The role requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions, standing or walking for extended periods, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Travel to job sites throughout Central Florida and within the state of Florida will be required.
