Assistant Head Routesetter

Compensation

This is a full time position. Hourly wage will be $22-$24/hour, (approximately $45,670 – $49,920 per year) depending on experience.

1 day vacation accrued per month this year. 10 days vacation every following year.

4 days PTO.

Requirements

• 1 year of experience setting rope and boulder.
• ability to forerun V6 and 5.12
• Strong time management skills.
• Understanding of setter and climber safety.
• Lead climbing proficiency.
• Empathetic and effective leadership and communication skills.
• Understanding of climbers movement across different climber types and skill levels.
• Must be a team player.
• Ability to effectively make tweaks and decisions as a leader in forerunning.
• Ability to give and receive constructive feedback professionally.
  
  

Preferred

• 2 years of experience setting rope and boulder.
• USAC L1 or higher.
• Work at height certification.
• Ability to forerun V8 and 5.13
• Competition setting experience.
• Prior management experience.

Assistant Head Setter Responsibilities

The assistant head setter will be responsible for assisting the head setter in managing the setting program including distribution of route difficulty and style for all our facilities and supervising other members of the setting team. We will offer bouldering, auto-belays, top rope, and lead climbing. Safety for both our climbers and staff are our top priorities. Because of this, we will use best safety practices for route-setting. You will work with the head setter to promote and enforce these safety practices.

• Assist in planning the distribution and density of climbing routes and continually monitor climber engagement and make adjustments as needed going forward.
• Lead and mentor the route-setting team members in an effort to further their setting skills, creativity, and community engagement.
• Assist the head setter in performing inspections and required maintenance on the walls and gear.
• Lead a forerunning team and make decisions on safety and grade referring to the head setter when necessary.
• Lead by example.
• Maintain cleanliness of holds, volumes, and walls.
• Spend time in the climbing areas interacting with climbers.
• Maintain employee engagement by giving them ownership of specific projects.
• Assist in gathering feedback for route-setters annual reviews.
• Be willing to take educational classes related to route setting, working at heights or management.
• The assistant head setter will be asked to set, up to 3 days a week.
• The assistant head setter will be asked to fill in for the head setter as needed.
  
  

The assistant head route-setter works under the direction of the head route-setter with collaboration from the Director.

Direct Reports

The assistant head setter will assist in supervising a team of setters, apprentice setters, forerunners and managing wall maintenance.

There is a requirement to work a flexible schedule as needed due to business needs and events. Duties may occur during, before or after open hours or on weekends for events.

Candidates must be able to work on their feet for significant amounts of time, be comfortable on ladders and rope systems for wall setting. They must also be able to lift 50 pounds as needed.
