The Dr. Feng laboratory investigates the roles of innate immune signaling pathways in the infection and pathogenesis of human herpesviruses, including Kaposi’s sarcoma–associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and herpes simplex viruses (HSV). Recently, the group uncovered pivotal roles of protein deamidation in fundamental biological processes, such as the immune response. Current research in Dr. Feng’s lab focuses on defining how deamidation links essential biological pathways to cellular metabolic status. As a Research Technician on our team, you will perform laboratory techniques and procedures required for assigned experimental studies, assist with establishing and scheduling analyses, conduct tests using a range of laboratory equipment and instrumentation, and assemble experimental results for review by research staff.
A caregiver in this position works days from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform laboratory techniques procedures required for experimental studies.
Perform technical lab duties as delegated by the Research Staff Supervisor related to the assigned project.
Schedule and perform the various analyses needed to complete the project.
Assist with establishing and scheduling of various procedures and analysis.
Prepare reagents and purify chemicals using chromatography, distillation, etc.
Identify, separate and quantify various substances.
Conduct tests and procedures utilizing various laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Accumulate data from analyses, prepare charts, graphs, statistical tables for presentation to Research Staff Supervisor for final analysis and preparation for publication, grant proposals and applications for research funds.
Potentially order laboratory supplies and equipment.
Mouse colony maintenance and expansion, assist mouse experiments, coordinate research activities, including supply and resource support.
Supervise junior lab members for lab chores and daily operation to facilitate research activity.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED and two years of experience in a research or related laboratory environment
OR Associate’s Degree in a laboratory science field and one year of experience
OR Bachelor’s Degree
Comfortable handling small animals in an academic research setting
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Proficiency working with mouse models
Strong decision-making skills for routine mouse colony maintenance and expansion
Experience supervising junior lab members in animal use and daily laboratory operations
Background in animal models for viral infection and antitumor therapy, as well as lab management including supply and resource coordination
Proven ability to coordinate multiple researchers to support complex experiments
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods
Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment
Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information
Ability to distinguish color
Manual dexterity to handle specimens and repair equipment
Ability to lift and transport equipment or specimens weighing up to 20 pounds
May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, bio-hazards, radioactive materials, etc.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
Pay Range
Minimum hourly: $18.88
Maximum hourly: $28.80
