Bus Driver

Clear Lake Classical is seeking a dependable, safety-minded Part-Time School Bus Driver to provide regular student transportation between Forest City, Garner, Ventura, and Clear Lake, as well as transportation between CLC campuses and for athletics, field trips, and other school activities.

The regular morning route runs Forest City → Garner → Ventura → Clear Lake, with the afternoon route returning Clear Lake → Ventura → Garner → Forest City. The 30–40 passenger school bus may be stored in either the Clear Lake or Forest City area depending upon the driver's location and school needs.

Applicants who are already fully licensed are encouraged to apply. CLC will also assist a qualified candidate who is otherwise qualified in obtaining the licensing, endorsements, training, and other requirements necessary to drive a school bus in Iowa and will cover approved qualification costs. No candidate may transport students until all legal and school requirements have been completed.

Schedule

Regular route hours are approximately:

• Morning: 6:30–8:00 a.m.
• Afternoon: 3:00–4:30 p.m.
• Additional hours: Irregular transportation for athletics, field trips, campus transportation, and other school activities

Availability for the regular morning and afternoon routes and for some athletics and field-trip transportation is required.

Responsibilities

The School Bus Driver will:

• Safely transport students on the regular Forest City, Garner, Ventura, and Clear Lake route.
• Provide transportation between CLC campuses and for athletics, field trips, and other activities as assigned.
• Pick up the bus from its designated storage location and return it following assigned routes.
• Complete required pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
• Maintain strict punctuality for all scheduled routes and activities.
• Communicate promptly through Remind regarding early dismissals, late starts, schedule changes, or driver/vehicle availability.
• Fuel the vehicle as needed using a CLC purchasing card or approved reimbursement procedure.
• Keep the bus clean and orderly and establish clear expectations that students leave the vehicle better than they found it.
• Manage car seat or booster-seat storage and tracking as needed.
• Maintain required mileage, route, inspection, transportation, and vehicle records for payroll and school reporting.
• Coordinate maintenance needs with the Facilities Director.
• Follow all school, state, and federal safety requirements, including restrictions on texting or making calls while driving.
• Exercise appropriate supervision, good judgment, and care for the safety and welfare of students.

The School Bus Driver reports to the Facilities Director, who works in coordination with the Head of School.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

• Be at least 21 years old.
• Hold a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
• Hold, or be able to obtain before transporting students, the appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements for the assigned vehicle.
• Complete all required CDL, school-bus-driver, and entry-level driver training.
• Meet applicable medical qualification requirements.
• Obtain and maintain required authorization to operate a school bus in Iowa.
• Successfully complete required background and registry checks.
• Successfully complete required DOT drug and alcohol testing.
• Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, sound judgment, professional communication, and a strong commitment to student safety.
• Be willing to perform basic bus cleaning, fueling, inspection documentation, and maintenance coordination.

Licensing and Training Assistance

Candidates do not need to possess all school-bus credentials when they apply. For a candidate selected for the position, Clear Lake Classical will provide assistance with the required qualification process and cover approved costs associated with:

• Required CDL and endorsement training and testing
• Required school-bus-driver training
• Required medical examination
• Background and registry checks
• Required drug testing
• Applicable licensing and testing fees

All required qualifications must be successfully completed before the employee transports students.

Compensation

Starting at $16.00 per hour, with a higher rate available based on school-bus driving experience and existing qualifications.

Paid work includes assigned driving time, required pre-trip and post-trip inspections, required waiting time, and required training.

Continuation of the transportation position and route is contingent upon adequate student enrollment to sustain a cost-effective transportation program.

Expected hours: 15.0 – 25.0 per week
