Position Title: Telecommunicator Job Summary: Under the administrative supervision of the Chief of Police and the functional supervision of the Police Sergeant, the Telecommunicator provides all communication functions, information, and reporting support for the Police Department and the College. Job Description: Keeps records, logs, and schedules of the calls received and actions taken utilizing a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS). Handles all communications via radio and telephone for all three CLC Campuses: Grayslake, Southlake, and Lakeshore. Responsible for Emergency Notifications to the College Community via Public Address Systems, internet-based alerting systems, etc. Monitors and maintains the location of all CLC Police Personnel, as well as assisting emergency response personnel from neighboring agencies when responding to a CLC Campus incident at all three CLC Campuses: Grayslake, Southlake, and Lakeshore. Monitors and coordinates efforts pertaining to CLC Fire Alarm System, Panic Alarms, Hold Up Alarms, surveillance cameras, and other various security systems. Staffs the Emergency Door Locking System for emergency use. Conducts and partakes in Emergency radio, Disaster, Fire Alarm, drills, etc. Coordinates and maintains all Law Enforcement Agency Data Systems (LEADS)/National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) queries, entries, modifications, and cancellations. Acts as the conduit between surrounding agencies for mutual aid requests and responses. Monitors radios for surrounding jurisdictions for emergency traffic with a potential adverse effect upon the CLC Campuses, including Grayslake Police, Gurnee Police, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, Vernon Hills Police, Waukegan Police, Illinois State Police Emergency Radio System (ISPERN), StarComm-State Wide Area Radio Communication for ILEAS. Updates and maintains CLC Police security logging systems for after-hour parking, key sign-out, area authorizations, etc. Supplies information to the public. Gives directions. Provides walk-up service to public, i.e., vehicle jump starts, vehicle lock-outs, etc. Takes initial information for service. Registers Sex Offender/Violent Offender Against Youth Institution of Higher Education Registrations. Performs various other receptionist-type duties. Records and maintains status of CLC Police Parking Citations, Traffic Citations, Racial Profile Information, Traffic Crash Reports, Criminal Reports, etc. Receives, records, and maintains status of CLC “Lost & Found” items. Female Telecommunicator will act as Police Matron for Female Prisoners when a female police officer is not on duty. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or his/her designee. Required Qualifications A high school diploma or equivalent. Ability to multitask under high stress situations. Experience working with the public or customer service. Familiarity with a computer (Word/Excel). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to deal with problematic situations. Access to dependable transportation 24/7. Access to a telephone 24/7. Familiarity with radio communications/dispatch procedures. Ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Desired Qualifications Previous experience in Emergency (Police/Fire/EMS) Dispatching. Previous experience utilizing a Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS). Law Enforcement Agency Data Systems (LEADS)/National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) certification(s) or previous certification in another state's equivalent system. Bilingual in Spanish and English. Work Schedule Position is scheduled for up to 25 hours per week. Shifts may be scheduled any day of the week, excluding holidays. Weekly schedules may vary based on coverage needs and will be coordinated between the employee, Lead Telecommunicator, and Sergeant.
