What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Maintenance Technician position at Clay County?
Clay County is seeking a skilled Traffic Maintenance Technician. This critical role is responsible for the full lifecycle of road signage—from design and fabrication to installation—while providing vital support for subdivision inspections, right-of-way permits, and GIS infrastructure mapping. You will serve as a key technical resource for the County, ensuring roadway safety and regulatory compliance through expert field work and administrative coordination.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Signage Management: Fabricate, install, and maintain regulatory, warning, and street signs/posts. Ensure all signage conforms to MUTCD standards. Maintain inventory levels and manage the disposal or recycling of damaged materials.
- Inspections & Permitting: Assists with driveway and utility permits, including plan review and approval. Perform field inspections of new subdivision infrastructure and document existing conditions to ensure compliance with County guidelines.
- Data & GIS: Utilize GIS tools to locate and record County infrastructure components. Schedule and perform traffic count studies (volume, speed, etc.) using specialized counting equipment.
- Public & Agency Liaison: Coordinate right-of-way activities with utility companies and contractors. Respond to inquiries from citizens and other departments regarding permitting and regulations.
- Emergency Response: Serve as a point of contact for after-hours emergencies. Participate in on-call rotations for public safety incidents, including snow removal and major storm cleanup.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of MUTCD requirements for sign layout and placement.
- Proficiency in software for sign fabrication, asset management, and MS Office.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, construction drawings, and complex policies.
- Skilled in operating specialized tools and equipment (bucket trucks, power tools, computers).
- Strong communication skills to establish effective relationships with contractors and the public.
- Familiarity with the geography and road networks of rural Clay County.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Proven experience in traffic sign requirements and County right-of-way standards.
- Valid Missouri Class A or B CDL
- Clean background investigation (reputation for honesty and trustworthiness).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in extreme outdoor weather conditions/uneven terrain.
Desired Qualifications:
- Tanker and Hazmat endorsements.
- Pre-existing familiarity with rural Clay County streets and locations.
Work Environment:
This role involves a mix of office, shop, and field work. You must be prepared to work outdoors in extreme weather (heat, cold, snow) and near construction sites with exposure to noise, dust, and varying terrain.
