What are the responsibilities and job description for the Exhaust Fabricator – OEM-Correct Classic Car Systems (Non-Repetitive Work) position at Classic Exhaust Systems?
Exhaust Fabricator – OEM-Correct Classic Car Systems (Non-Repetitive Work)
Classic Exhaust Systems LLC
$22–$32 per hour (Skill-Based Pay Structure)
Full-Time
In-Shop Position | Monday–Thursday (Friday If Needed)
Company Overview
Classic Exhaust Systems LLC designs and manufactures OEM-correct exhaust systems for classic and vintage vehicles ranging from the 1920s through the 1980s.
We serve restoration shops, collectors, and enthusiasts nationwide who demand factory-correct fitment, appearance, and function.
This is not mass production and not repetitive fabrication. Every exhaust system is built using historical diagrams, bending cards, and specifications — often a different system every day.
Fabrication Role Overview
This is a high-skill exhaust fabrication role focused on building non-repetitive OEM-style exhaust systems.
Tube forming and precision bending on Huth tube benders is the core and primary responsibility of this position. Welding (MIG and TIG) becomes part of the role as you gain experience and skill.
You will not be running the same part repeatedly. You will be expected to:
- Learn new exhaust systems regularly
- Interpret OEM-era documentation accurately
- Think through each build before fabricating
- Build systems correctly the first time
If you enjoy problem-solving, variety, and craftsmanship, this role offers long-term stability in a rare trade.
If you need repetitive work to succeed, this position will not be a good fit.
REQUIRED: Ability to Learn & Adapt Daily
This role requires someone who can confidently work through constantly changing fabrication work. You must be able to:
- Learn new exhaust kits and configurations frequently
- Switch between different makes, models, and years
- Follow diagrams, bending cards, and work orders precisely
- Ask questions before making irreversible fabrication decisions
This is thinking fabrication — tube forming first, assembly and welding second.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform precision tube forming and bending using Huth tube benders (program card bending, pattern bending, radius die selection, depth and pressure adjustments)
- Fabricate complete OEM-style exhaust systems from raw tubing
- Interpret work orders, master keys, diagrams, and bending cards
- Cut, deburr, expand, and finish tubing
- MIG weld (TIG as skills progress) exhaust components and assemblies
- Verify accuracy through quality control checks
- Maintain tools, machines, and a clean, safe workspace
- Coordinate with management when documentation or configurations require clarification
ATTENTION TO WORK ORDER AND SOP'S AND KPI'S IS A MUST
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience in tube bending, pipe bending, or metal fabrication is highly valued
- Ability to read diagrams, technical documents, and fabrication references
- MIG welding experience is helpful; TIG is a plus — however, tube forming expertise is the priority skill for this role
- Strong attention to detail — accuracy matters
- Mechanical problem-solving ability
- Comfortable working independently after training
- Physically capable of fabrication shop work
- Reliable, disciplined, and quality-focused
Important Hiring Policy:
No matter how skilled or experienced you are in your craft, ALL new hires will start at the Entry-Level Fabricator rate ($22–$24/hr). Advancement to higher pay tiers requires proven ability to independently build complete exhaust systems correctly on the first try.
Preferred (But Not Required)
- Huth tube bender experience
- OEM-style or restoration fabrication background
- Pattern bending or program card experience
- Classic car or vintage automotive knowledge
We will train the right person — but only if they demonstrate the ability to learn and retain information.
Compensation & Skill Progression
$22–$32 per hour, based on demonstrated fabrication skill.
Pay at Classic Exhaust Systems is skill-based, not time-based. Fabricators advance as they demonstrate higher levels of independence, accuracy, and problem-solving ability.
Skill-Based Pay Structure
- $22–$24/hr — Entry-Level Fabricator Learning OEM exhaust systems and documentation. Requires guidance when interpreting diagrams and bending cards. Builds systems under supervision. Focused on fundamentals and accuracy.
- $25–$28/hr — Independent Fabricator Reads work orders, diagrams, and bending cards independently. Fabricates complete exhaust systems with minimal oversight. Consistently produces accurate, clean work.
- $29–$32/hr — Senior / High-Skill Fabricator Handles complex, uncommon, or historically inconsistent systems. Strong pattern bending and program card execution. Trusted to identify documentation issues and propose solutions.
Pay Growth Philosophy
Pay increases are based on demonstrated skill growth, not tenure.
Advancement occurs as new systems, tools, and techniques (especially tube forming mastery) are learned.
Faster is not better — correct is better.
