ABOUT THE POSITION

The Clark County Public Works Road Division is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Vector Control Officer I/II position. This position implements plans to control and eliminate harmful insect, pest, and weed infestations throughout the County; assists in the identification of vector-borne disease potential and the implementation of practices for their control. The candidate will be part of the Vector Control Unit and report to the Vector Control Supervisor.

Vector Control Officer I: $24.79 - 36.58 Hourly
Vector Control Officer II: $26.70 - 39.50 Hourly

The Vector Control Officer I is a training underfill position, upon successful completion of the training program the successful candidate will be non-competitively promoted to Vector Control Office II.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months at either level or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

Vector Control Officer I - Equivalent to graduation from high school AND three (3) years of full-time experience in vegetation management with herbicides/pest control/vector control or related experience, which has included the safe application and/or handling of pesticides.

Vector Control Officer II - In addition to the above, one (1) year of full-time experience in vector control.

Working Conditions: Work with exposure to potentially hazardous herbicides and pesticides. Wear self-contained breathing equipment. Work with exposure to animals, insects and/or noxious plants.

Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at time of appointment. Must possess a valid State of Nevada Governmental License to apply pesticides prior to appointment or advancement to the II level.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician. A respirator test is part of the exam.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Identifies and inspects areas prone to mosquito infestations; collects samples and identifies mosquito types; applies control measures as required.
  • Performs physical control at infestation sites by digging drainage ditches or by removing other obstacles to drainage.
  • Calibrates spray equipment, mixes chemicals and operates manual and power spray equipment to apply pesticides and other chemicals on County rights-of-way.
  • Responds to calls from the public regarding other insect nests and infestations; collects samples and recommends methods of treatment.
  • Participates in vector control programs for other problem insects, rodents and vertebrates as required.
  • Performs weed control/weed abatement duties.
  • Answers complaints from the public concerning mosquitoes, flies and other pests, takes corrective action and notifies complainants.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair to a variety of hand and power equipment; repairs and maintains small gasoline motors and power spraying equipment.
  • Maintains records of pesticides applied and of vector infestations treated; prepares periodic and specialized reports of work performed.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • May instruct and direct the work of temporary staff assisting with vector control activities.
  • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, and drives a variety of motor vehicles in the course of the work.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment and to drive motor vehicles to perform inspections and apply pesticides; strength to lift materials weighing up to 70 pounds; stamina to walk over extended periods and difficult terrain; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
