WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (Part-Time)

Clark County Health Department – Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Program
Pay Range: $15.13 – $22.13 per hour
Schedule: Part-time, approximately 20 hours per week
Benefits: Paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave (health insurance not available for this position)

Help Support Moms and Babies in Our Community!

The Clark County Health Department is seeking a compassionate and dedicated WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to join our Women, Infants & Children (WIC) team. This position provides encouragement, education, and peer support to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers as they work toward their breastfeeding goals.

As a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, you will use your own breastfeeding experience to connect with WIC participants, provide practical support, share helpful resources, and help mothers overcome common breastfeeding challenges. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about helping families, enjoys building relationships, and wants to make a positive impact in the community.

Support is provided through phone calls, clinic visits, home visits, hospital visits, and group education opportunities while working alongside WIC nutrition professionals and breastfeeding specialists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing breastfeeding encouragement and support to WIC mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey
  • Share basic breastfeeding education, benefits, and strategies for addressing common challenges
  • Communicate with pregnant and breastfeeding participants by phone, in the clinic, at home, or in hospital settings according to program guidelines
  • Build trusting relationships while maintaining participant privacy and confidentiality
  • Document participant contacts and maintain accurate program records
  • Identify concerns and connect participants with appropriate WIC staff, lactation consultants, healthcare providers, or community resources when needed
  • Assist with breastfeeding classes, prenatal education, and infant feeding support groups
  • Promote breastfeeding support within the WIC clinic and community
  • Assist with program activities, reporting, and outreach efforts
  • Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and continuing education opportunities

Minimum Qualifications

Successful candidates must:

  • Have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Have exclusively or substantially breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of six months
  • Have a strong desire to support and encourage other mothers with breastfeeding
  • Be a current or former WIC participant or meet WIC eligibility requirements

Preferred Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Knowledge and personal experience with breastfeeding and lactation support
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups in a respectful and encouraging manner
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and accurate records
  • Comfort using computers, email, Microsoft Office programs, and web-based reporting systems
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating with a supportive team
  • Ability to adapt communication styles to meet different learning needs
