Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training (Water & Sewer Program Focused)

Pay: $19.29–$31.17 per hour

Job Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 40 hours per week (8-hour shifts)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Classified

Join Our Team

We are seeking a motivated Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training to join our Environmental Health Division. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career environmental health professional looking to gain hands-on experience while working toward becoming a Registered Environmental Health Specialist.

In this role, you will work under the guidance of a Registered Environmental Health Specialist to protect public health through inspections, investigations, sampling, and regulatory compliance. While this position supports all Environmental Health programs, it has a primary emphasis on private water systems and sewage treatment systems.

What You'll Do

Under supervision, you will:

  • Conduct inspections, testing, sampling, and compliance activities for environmental health programs.
  • Assist with inspections of:
  • Private Water Systems
  • Sewage Treatment Systems
  • Food Service Operations
  • Retail Food Establishments
  • Public Swimming Pools and Spas
  • Manufactured Home Parks
  • Schools and Campgrounds
  • Body Art Facilities
  • Solid and Infectious Waste Facilities
  • Composting Facilities
  • Septage and Solid Waste Hauling Vehicles
  • Investigate foodborne illness complaints, nuisance complaints, indoor air quality concerns, and other environmental health issues.
  • Collect water, food, and environmental samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Perform routine field testing and screening procedures.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, investigation summaries, mileage logs, and other required documentation.
  • Participate in professional development, continuing education, and required certification training.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness and public health response activities as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health or a related science field (such as Biology or Chemistry).
  • Eligible for registration as an Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training with the Ohio Department of Health.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training registration in accordance with Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4736.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license.
  • Reliable transportation with proof of automobile insurance.
  • Driving record that meets agency insurance requirements.

Physical Requirements

This position includes a combination of office and field work.

Employees should be able to:

  • Walk, stand, sit, and travel throughout the workday.
  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Drive to inspection sites throughout the jurisdiction.
  • Use specialized environmental testing equipment and standard office technology.
