- Perform routine and deep cleaning, such as sweeping, mopping, buffing, and waxing floors.
- Vacuum and shampoo carpets regularly.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including fixtures, walls, and mirrors, and restock supplies.
- Wash windows, walls, and woodwork.
- Empty trash cans, transport trash to disposal areas, and manage recycling.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces, toys, and equipment in classrooms and common areas.
- Clean up spills, bodily fluids, and other accidents using proper safety procedures.
- Perform minor building and equipment repairs, such as patching floor and wall nicks.
- Replace light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and ceiling tiles.
- Perform basic plumbing and electrical troubleshooting.
- Assemble and repair furniture, shelving, and other equipment.
- Assist in setting up and tearing down furniture and equipment for special events.
- Operate and maintain custodial equipment, such as buffers, vacuums, and pressure washers.
- Ensure the facility meets all health and safety regulations, including those for handling and disposing of hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens.
- Pick up and remove paper and debris from school grounds and playgrounds.
- Clean, organize, and inspect outdoor play areas to ensure safety.
- Perform lawn maintenance, landscaping, and other grounds keeping duties.
- Clear snow and ice from walkways and entrances when necessary.
- Assist in maintaining playground equipment and outdoor fixtures.
- Lock and secure doors and windows at the end of each shift and activate alarm systems.
- Report any safety concerns or maintenance issues to a supervisor promptly.
- Monitor and manage cleaning supplies, keeping supply rooms organized and compliant with safety regulations.
- Use and store cleaning chemicals according to safety protocols and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Respond to facility emergencies as needed.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with cleaning methods, procedures, and safety practices, especially regarding children.
- Physical ability: Must be able to lift, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a repetitive basis and stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
- Communication: Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to interact effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
- Dependability: The ability to be on time, follow a schedule, and work independently.
- Licensing: A valid Tennessee driver's license may be required.
- Education: A high school diploma or GED is often preferred.
