Hughes Construction Co., Inc. is seeking a skilled and experienced Heavy Truck & Trailer Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain our fleet of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and support equipment. This position plays a critical role in ensuring company vehicles remain safe, operational, and compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations.
The ideal candidate will have experience working on diesel and gas-powered equipment including dump trucks, road tractors, lowboy/low drag trailers, box trailers, and various heavy hauling equipment. This role requires hands-on mechanical work in both shop and field environments, including exposure to varying weather conditions and occasional roadside repairs. Candidates must provide their own tools.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Perform inspections, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and fleet equipment
- Diagnose and repair diesel and gas-powered engines, transmissions, drivetrains, suspension systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, and air systems
- Service and maintain dump trucks, road tractors, lowboy/low drag trailers, box trailers, and related hauling equipment
- Complete preventative maintenance services based on company schedules and driver vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs)
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic equipment, schematics, and repair manuals
- Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, tire inspections, and fluid checks
- Repair or replace worn and damaged components including brakes, air lines, lights, wiring, suspension parts, and hydraulic components
- Respond to and perform roadside service and emergency repairs as needed
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts usage, labor hours, and preventative maintenance activities
- Conduct DOT inspections and ensure all vehicles and trailers remain compliant with DOT standards and company safety requirements
- Assist with maintaining inventory of shop supplies and repair parts
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety within the shop and work areas
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working on heavy-duty trucks, trailers, diesel engines, and fleet equipment preferred
- Experience working on dump trucks, road tractors, trailers, lowboys/low drags, and heavy hauling equipment preferred
- Experience with both diesel and gas-powered vehicles and equipment required
- Valid driver’s license required (CDL preferred)
- DOT medical card preferred or ability to obtain prior to hire
- Welding and fabrication experience preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Must provide own tools
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities
- Knowledge of diesel and gas engine systems and components
- Experience with hydraulic, electrical, brake, suspension, and air systems
- Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, schematics, and diagnostic software
- Familiarity with DOT regulations and inspection requirements
- Ability to safely operate trucks and equipment for testing purposes
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Basic computer knowledge for repair documentation and maintenance tracking
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently in a fast-paced environment
- Reliable, dependable, and strong work ethic
- Valid Drivers License and Reliable Transportation
- Must provide documentation to verify identity and employment eligibility in accordance with federal I-9 requirements
- Ability to pass drug test and background check
- Willingness to travel and work in different areas as needed

- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical labor
- Ability to work overtime and extended hours based on workload
- Must be 18 years of age
- Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly
- Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tight spaces
- Ability to work underneath vehicles and trailers safely
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods
- Capability to work in both shop and outdoor environments
- Shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, heat, grease, fumes, and vibration
- Outdoor work and roadside repairs in varying weather conditions
- Exposure to traffic, active construction zones, and heavy equipment hazards

- Full-time position
- Monday through Friday with 8-hour shifts
- Overtime and occasional weekend work as needed
