The City of Wylie Fire Department is accepting applications for one (1) Part-Time Fire Prevention Inspector position. This role supports the Fire Prevention Division through inspection activities, public education, and assistance with emergency management functions.

The selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Division Chief – Fire Marshal and will primarily conduct fire and life safety inspections in accordance with applicable codes and department policies. This position does not include fire investigations.

The schedule for this position is flexible, with an expected workload of approximately 16 to 19 hours per week, not to exceed 1,000 hours per calendar year. Work hours will generally occur during normal business hours; however, some flexibility may be required based on operational needs. While general assignments and priorities are established by the supervisor, the inspector is expected to manage their schedule within established guidelines to ensure efficiency and productivity.

This position may involve addressing unique or non-routine situations requiring independent judgment, research, and code interpretation. The role also requires frequent interaction with the public, business owners, and stakeholders, necessitating professionalism, tact, and effective communication skills.

Supervision is provided by the Division Chief – Fire Marshal.

  • Inspects buildings and locations for compliance with applicable fire codes and standards.
  • Reviews building and life-safety system plans for compliance. Discuss results with business owners, managers, architects, and developers; recommend corrections and issue warning notices as necessary.
  • Issues citations as a last resort for violations not corrected; maintains files and records, and appears in municipal court to testify when required.
  • Assists the Fire Marshal with public education programs and presentations to schools, businesses, and civic organizations.
  • Perform as a responsible steward of the public trust and strive for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
  • Act in a civil and respectful manner at all times towards management, coworkers, and others.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • An Associate’s degree in Fire Protection Technology, Emergency Management, or related field is preferred, but not required.
  • Valid Driver's License. Must have a Texas Driver’s License, without restrictions except “A” within 30 days of hire.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Fire Inspector Certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management.
  • May be required to acquire additional certifications.

Primary Work Environment

Indoors/Outdoors. May be exposed to serious physical dangers and extreme weather conditions. May work under stressful conditions demanding a great deal of physical strength and agility, mental alertness, and concentration when engaged in emergency operations.

Physical Strength Required

High: Exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or 20-50 pounds constantly. Equipment and tools utilized include a personal computer, copier, mobile data computer, video camera, digital cameras, specialized fire department equipment, hand tools, flashlights, a weapon, radio communications equipment, appropriate personal protective equipment, and a department vehicle.
