Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Investigates allegations
• Prepares motions and responses to motions in a timely manner
• Meets with victims and witnesses for case preparation
• Negotiates pleas
• Prepares and prosecutes complex trial cases involving misdemeanors and felonies in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, General District Court and Circuit Court
• Prepares and conducts briefings and arguments and briefs in response to defense petitions for appeal
• Advises magistrates on the law 
• Assists police department in investigations of criminal activities and advises department on criminal procedures and offenses in Virginia; Work as assigned by Supervising Attorneys 
• Act as Special Prosecutor at direction of Commonwealth's Attorney; 
• Prepare for weekly trials 
• Prosecute misdemeanors
• Prepare sentencing guidelines 
• Review Concealed weapon applications
• Catalog "dead" arrest warrants and dispose thereof
• Prosecute felonies in Circuit Court when directed to do so 
• Provide periodic training to police, citizens, etc.
• Conduct legal research

Requirements:

Education and/or Experience: Juris Doctorate is required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Possession of a valid and appropriate driver's license. Member of the Virginia Bar, licensed to practice under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the laws, ordinances and regulations. Some knowledge of the organization, function and methods of operation of the staff and operating departments. Ability to analyze a variety of complex legal problems, to make sound recommendations for their solutions and to prepare working procedures. Ability to express information effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other officials, employees and the public.
