Airport Equipment Operator (Seasonal On-Call)

Summary: Performs a variety of skilled work in the operation of equipment and specialized machinery utilized in airport maintenance and snow removal on an on-call basis.

Supervision Received: Airport Director, Assistant Airport Director, Operations Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor

Essential Job Functions:

1. Operates the following pieces of equipment: specialized airport snow removal equipment, snowplows, front-end loaders, sand spreaders, side by side utility vehicles, street sweepers, mowers, air compressor.
2. Operates a variety of other special and standard equipment as assigned.
3. Assist with sanding and snow removal.
4. Performs manual labor incidental to the operation to which assigned.
5. Must be on call on weekends or after hours.
6. Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.  
7. Ensures compliance with airport policies and procedures.
8. Maintains customer contacts through positive lines of communication by professionally representing the Airport and City of Williston through frequent and meaningful contact with the customer.
9. Be physically present in attendance at the worksite.
10. Performs related work as required.
11. The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to airport snow removal or maintenance responsibilities in a timely fashion. The position residency shall be such that when the employee is notified of a responsibility requesting their presence, the safe and prudent driving time to the airport shall be within 2 hours of notification.

Minimum Qualifications:  Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and use of equipment in general construction and maintenance activities. Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations related to equipment operation. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of heavy motor driven equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions. Skill in the operation of heavy motor driven equipment over rough, slippery, or unstable surfaces.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Education:  High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience:  Experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy motor driven equipment. 

Necessary Special Requirement:  Valid North Dakota driver license (North Dakota Commercial Driver License preferred); insurable under the City’s motor vehicle insurance policy.

Position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and is subject to controlled substance requirements at all times when on duty.

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. The employee regularly works in wet, humid conditions and near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, is exposed to risk of electrical shock and is subject to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is loud to very loud.

Time Commitment:  Time requirements are flexible depending on weather conditions.  On-call operators are required to attend one (1) meeting a month for two (2) hours to go through training on equipment and any other pertinent information.  Typical shifts will be 12 hours on, 12 hours off during an active snow event or other irregular airport operation.
