This role is crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of the City’s traffic signal systems, directly influencing traffic flow and public safety. Signal Electricians perform highly skilled electrical work, including the maintenance, repair, installation, and modification of traffic signals, controllers, and related equipment. Work is performed both in the field and in the shop, often in fast-paced and dynamic environments. The position includes weekly on-call rotations and responsibilities during snow removal operations, offering opportunities to demonstrate critical problem-solving skills under varying conditions. Workdays and Hours will be determined at the time of the hire. 

  •  Monday - Thursday: 7:00am -5:30pm
  • Tuesday - Friday: 7:00am -5:30pm

Compensation will be based on individual experience and determined at hire based on skills. The salary range for this position is $29.69– 35.29 hourly.   
  • Replaces bulbs, cleans lenses, adjusts signal heads, and services fixed-time, electromechanical and solid-state controllers, maintain & repair communications equipment.
  • Checks and repairs field wiring and loop detector amplifier units.
  • Checks and installs loop wire in pavement.
  • Installs and maintains new traffic signals and controllers.
  • Erects poles, installs detector wires in road surfaces, and installs signal heads; installs permanent traffic counters; repairs defective or damaged equipment.
  • May train others in the installation of some signal related equipment.

  • Knowledge of electrical theory, micro-processors and control circuitry preferred
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials used in electrical and related electromechanical repair work
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work
  • Skill in the use of hand tools and apparatus common to the electrical trade and in the operation of electrical and electromechanical equipment.
  • Ability to use electrical test equipment in repair of control equipment.
  • Ability to climb a ten-foot ladder while carrying 80-90 pounds of tools and/or equipment
  • Ability to climb in and out of a four- to six-foot-deep service box through a 24" diameter opening
  • Ability to lift 400 pounds two feet from ground with another person's help
  • Ability to apply 90-150 pounds of force on tools to tighten or cut electrical equipment and supplies on a daily basis, or in pulling cable
  • Ability to distinguish colors accurately
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic test equipment information
  • Ability to bend, twist, turn, pull and stretch daily
  • Ability to lean and reach as needed to read and interpret plans and specifications from a print that may be as large as 36 by 48 inches with information printed as small as twenty characters per inch
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas class A commercial driver's license, with an air brake endorsement within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a City of Wichita approved and registered journeyman electrician certificate within 4 years from date of hire. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country. 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain IMSA Level I, II, and III certificates (within 1, 2, and 5 years from date of hire, respectively).
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
Required Experience and Training

  • One year of training or experience in either electrical troubleshooting with solid-state electronics and systems diagnostics, or the installation and maintenance of traffic signals and related structures.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Class A CDL with an air brake and tanker endorsement within 60 days of employment. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country. 
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA)Level I certification within 1 years of employment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain IMSA Level II certification within 2 years of employment. 
  • Ability to obtain a Sedgwick County Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD) Journeyman Electrical Trade certificate prior to completion of 4 years of employment. 
  • Ability to obtain IMSA Level III certification upon completing five years of active employment within the Traffic Signal Section, following successful completion of IMSA Level I and II certifications and a journeyman electrician certificate. 
  • Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests. Candidates with the required experience and training will be required to take the following assessments:

Preferred Experience and Training


  • Valid Class A CDL with airbrake and tanker endorsement.
  • ISMA Level I, II or III certificate
  • A current MABCD Journeyman Electrical Trade certificate

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
