SEWER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE CRAFTSMAN - DPW SEWER GENERAL STATEMENT OF
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is routine manual laboring work of an
unskilled nature. Work involves the performance of relatively unskilled
and routine manual laboring tasks ordinarily requiring the exercise of
considerable physical strength and endurance. SUPERVISION: Work is
performed under supervision of an employee of a higher grade.
Supervision received may vary from close to moderate depending on
experience of the incumbent and variance from routine. ESSENTIAL DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITES: The essential functions or duties listed below are
intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be
performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not
exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a
logical assignment to the position. Digs and backfills holes, ditches,
and trenches, erects and removes poles and signs Sweeps streets, gutters
and sidewalks. Cleans catch basins, culverts, drains, and manholes.
Shovels snow, breaks ice, spreads sand, perform similar tasks with
regard to snow removal. Breaks pavement, spreads asphalt and performs
similar tasks for surface treatment of roads and sidewalks. Rakes
leaves, seeds, grades loam, trims trees and brush, picks up paper trash
and debris. Loads and unloads vehicles of material, equipment and
supplies. Washes, polishes, and sweeps floors, windows, and washrooms,
moves furniture and equipment. Performs unskilled tasks in assisting the
maintenance and repair of municipal bridges, street signs, highway
fences, and related structures. Operates jackhammers, power mowers,
cement mixers and similar equipment. Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school graduation plus sufficient work
experience or training to perform assigned duties; or any equivalent
combination of education and experience. Class D drivers? license, NEWEA
grade 1 license or the ability to obtain necessary licenses within six
months of hire. SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: Some knowledge of the use of
tools, equipment, and materials employed in municipal construction and
maintenance work. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.

Under Adverse Weather Conditions. PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS
Physical Skills Ability to travel throughout the City is necessary. Work
is largely physical in nature including standing, stooping, kneeling,
bending, squatting and may be repetitive in nature. Lifting of up to 75
pounds (may be heavier with assistance) and may be bulky with some
pulling and pushing or reaching. May carry 30-50 pounds. May require
climbing including on/off vehicles. Visual Skills Visual demands require
routinely reading documents and operate motor vehicles and other
equipment.
