LABORER/DRIVER

POSITION TITLE: LABORER / DRIVER

DEPARTMENT: SERVICE

REPORTS TO: FOREMAN and/or SERVICE DIRECTOR

Position Summary:

Performs a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction work; responsible for maintaining City grounds and landscaping, removing ice and snow from street, parking lots and sidewalks; and refuse collection.

Major Accountabilities:

• Daily rubbish collection for residential homeowners including special pick-ups; litter control throughout the city; landscaping at all public building and parks.
• Maintenance of grass and weed control on private property when identified as a nuisance;
• Street repair and maintenance (striping, asphalt and concrete work); public sewer maintenance (catch basin cleaning); seasonal leaf removal
• Participates in the manual labor associated with the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of the storm drainage system, water system & sanitary sewer system.
• Participates in the manual labor associated with the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of the roadway system, including roadway; shoulder & sidewalk operation.
• Street maintenance of ice, snow removal & applying salt to street during winter months 90% of daily tasks.

Position Qualifications:

• Must have a minimum of a high school education and preferably 4 years of experience in public works construction and/or experience as a general contractor. Formal training beyond high school in landscape design, construction and maintenance is desirable.
• Ability to use personal computer---Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and knowledge in use of proprietary computer systems.
• Must have good communication skills; requires a calm demeanor in responding to customer questions and/or complaints, and dealing with the general public in everyday activities.
• Ability to use and operate pick-up truck; tractor; fork lift; lawnmower, weed eater; chain saws; blowers; various spray equipment; front-end loader; miscellaneous power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, and cement finishing work.
• Must possess a valid Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class A or CDL Class B).
• Works overtime as required to complete tasks.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

• Lifting Heavy: Lifting over 50 pounds, with frequent lifting, pushing and/or carrying weighing over 25 pounds.
• Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, ramps, scaffolding, poles and the like; using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
• Reaching: Reaching above the shoulders to place and/or retrieve objects.
• Walking: Ability to walk for prolonged periods of time (usually a minimum of two or more hours per day.)
• Standing: Ability to stand with little movement for prolonged periods of time (Usually a minimum of two or more hours per day).
• Agility: Ability to move quickly and easily often including the ability to crawl stoop or bend.
• Chemical or Biological Agents: Regular contact and usage knowledge of working with potentially harmful chemical or biological agents.
• Heavy Equipment: Operates various heavy equipment such as tractors, backhoes, graders, truck, etc.
• Power Equipment: Operates power tools or other machinery that are potentially hazardous.
• Work Environment-Outdoors: Ability to work around moving objects, machinery or vehicles.
• Work Environment-Surfaces: Ability to walk on slippery or uneven surfaces.
