The City of Virginia Beach is recruiting for a Transportation Planner I/II to join the Planning & Community Development Department. This position will work closely with the Transportation Planner III and collaborate with other city departments and regional/state/federal agencies like Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO), and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). This position may be filled as a Planner I or Planner II depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant.
The associated pay grades are as follows:
Planner I - A.10: $57,012.80 - $72,685.60
Planner II - A.12: $62,857.60 - $80,142.40
Primary duties associated with this position are as follows:
- Comprehensive Plan Policy: Assist with the coordination of the City’s Master Transportation Plan and the transportation components of area plans, coordination with the local transit agency, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT). Knowledge of land use planning, site plan review, and active transportation planning is preferred. Assist with other comprehensive and area planning activities as needed.
- Transportation Planning: Support the Transportation Planning group with local and regional transportation planning and project needs and provide technical services for special and cross-departmental and regional projects and plans. Provide research and analysis for planning efforts or completing state and federal grants.
- Written, Verbal, and Visual Communication: Assist with technical written, verbal, and visual information to internal and external groups; assist with public meetings; develop written reports, maps, meeting summaries, and briefings related to Transportation Planning and development for Strategic Growth Areas. Work in close coordination with Public Works Traffic Engineering and modeling staff to provide necessary data and analysis for land use applications, development proposals, and master plans. Experience with geographic information systems and visualization software such as ArcGIS and Adobe is preferred.
- Emerging Transportation Technology: Knowledge of, or interest in exploring future transportation technologies including but not limited to automated and connected vehicle technology, shared-use mobility, and mobility as a service. This position will work closely with Public Works Traffic Engineering and Operations along with city/regional groups.
- Boards and Commissions: Represent the Planning Department and provide technical assistance to staff, boards, commissions, Council, and the public and present reports, staff recommendations, and other findings as needed.
- Interagency Support: Participate in various city/state/regional/federal level working groups related to comprehensive, Area, or Transportation Planning.
