Job Duties:
Join Our Team as a Mosquito Control Maintenance Worker! The City of Virginia Beach Public Works-Mosquito Control Division is seeking dedicated individuals to become part of our team. As a Mosquito Control Maintenance Worker, you will engage in essential maintenance tasks that directly contribute to the health and safety of our community. Your responsibilities will include:
- Perform maintenance work requiring the utilization of specific skills associated with drainage maintenance and the application of pesticides for mosquito control.
- Will remove objects from work area which impeded drainage; bush and grade ditches to maintain efficient water runoff; apply larvicide to areas harboring mosquito larvae and pupae or having the potential to harbor these to reduce mosquito populations; apply adulticides in areas with known high levels of mosquito activity.
- Apply herbicide to areas where vegetation obstructs proper drainage; cut/ clear trees and heavy brush to gain access to drainage areas; mix and apply chemicals per specifications on the label for field applications.
- Lift materials and other items up to 50 lbs regularly
Applicant will be required to obtain and maintain either a Registered Technician’s License or Category 8 Pesticide Applicator’s License within six (6) months of employment.

Position is ALPHA I and is required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes, and snow, etc.) an/or in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Pre-employment physical is required.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Preferably six (6) months of experience in field such as laborer, maintenance or construction worker utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must have or obtain a valid Registered Technicians License within 6 months of hire.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.

Preferences:
- Valid Driver’s License (VA or NC)
- High School Diploma or GED
- Registered Technician License or Category 8 Pesticide Applicator’s License
- Experience in the proper use of drainage maintenance hand tools (shovels, bush ax, pitchfork, rake, weed-eater, etc.), basic safe work practice with hand tools.
- Experience in grading drainage ditches effectively using shovel and performing brush removal and hauling in an efficient, safe manner.
- Experience in identifying mosquito breeding sites, perform physical labor including but not limited to the period of an 8 to 10-hour workday, carrying and dragging heavy materials out of the drainage area.
- Experience in the safe effective application of pesticides for mosquito control.
- Ability to perform basic mathematic calculations.
- Ability to life heavy objects of at least 50 lbs.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
