What are the responsibilities and job description for the City Arborist #46849 position at City of Virginia Beach?
CITY ARBORIST duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide professional management of the urban forest with the assistance of the inspection staff, monitor city development for compliance with policy and code requirements, ordinances and administrative directives pertaining to forest management and landscaping, track and project urban forestry expenditures.
- Collaborate with inspectors in the review of all highway permits, land disturbing C.I.P. projects, private developments, and utility projects to eliminate conflicts with existing and proposed trees and vegetation in city right-of-way.
- Inspect, diagnose and initiate appropriate work orders and reports for trees in city right-of-way, and other public properties to ensure public safety.
- Develop and administer a holistic, environmentally sensitive pest management program inclusive of effective monitoring, suppression and population management strategies. Provide technical data.
- Training in arboricultural-related subjects to facilitate division operations.
- Prepare various management reports, proposals, grant and award applications, budget documents and public relations materials.
- Establish and provide training and leadership for volunteers engaged in urban forestry activities.
- Provide leadership in emergency storm response following hurricanes, ice storms and other major storm events.
- Supervise technical staff engaged in arboriculture activities.
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive inventory of street trees and trees in parks, municipal building sites and other improved city property through the use of GIS programs.
- Assist city departments on matters pertaining to trees on request.
- Provide training as needed to other departments for inspection and review purposes as to applicable.
- Provide technical and general data to public to keep them abreast of current arboricultural practices and local tree canopy statistics.
- Provide informational presentations to various groups including students that educate and engage the audience.
- Lead and coordinate tree related events such as Arbor Day Celebrations, Tree Pruning Clinics, and a fall tree planting festival
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as requested by leadership
