Parks Supervisor

Under the general direction of the Parks Superintendent and/or Assistant Parks and Recreation Director , this position assists in planning the activities, projects and personnel engaged in performing grounds and parks maintenance work and repairs to include athletic fields, courts, playgrounds and other amenities, turf maintenance, tree care and urban forestry operations, irrigation system maintenance and programming, pond and fountain maintenance, and supervision of park reservations and special events.

• Assists in scheduling, supervising and performing of daily operations of the Parks and Recreation Department. Schedules staff for specific projects and maintenance on a daily basis.
• Daily inspections of parks, work order creation and management, daily checkups and spot checks of the various crews on the job sites
• Supervises urban forestry operations to include pruning, removals, planting, root flare work, inventory maintenance, hazardous tree assessments, tree health and condition assessments, and emergency response.
• Supervises, evaluates, and/or performs various park maintenance tasks, such as: planting and removal of trees, shrubs, flowers, ground covers, litter control, turf maintenance, weed control, repair and maintenance of athletic fields; irrigation system, pond and fountain repair and maintenance, maintenance and repair of structures, landscape and structure construction. Ensures quality control throughout each project. Identify pest populations and treatment programs.
• Participates in payroll and timekeeping.
• Supervises athletic fields, park reservation requests and special events.
•  Evaluates the performance of employees and coaches them on opportunities for professional development. Maintains records of work performed such as job assignments, jobs completed and specific reports regarding labor, materials and equipment use.
• Investigates citizen complaints and requests for services such as athletic field usage, park reservations, tree matters, and general park concerns.
• Provides in-field inspection services and assist in settling disputes of reservable park space utilization.
• Assists with scheduling trainings and professional development for the department. Requisitions equipment, materials and supplies through established purchasing guidelines. Coordinates the procurement and delivery of materials, equipment, and supplies to assure completion of assigned jobs.
• May be required to work evenings and weekends.
• Assists in inventory, procurement, and storage, and general upkeep of equipment

Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
High school diploma or equivalent plus five years of extensive experience in urban forestry, athletic fields, sports turf management, irrigation system maintenance, employee supervision required. ISA Certified Arborist designation preferred. Professional Turf Manager Certification (CPTM) or a minimum of an Associate’s degree in Turf Management a plus. Current Irrigator license preferred. Valid Texas B-CDL Driver's License preferred within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills 
Ability to read and understand technical materials, plans, and specifications. Familiarization with city codes and ordinances as well as state and federal regulations and statutes. Skill in the use of a variety of machines and heavy equipment used in construction. Ability to calculate field measurements to determine material quantities. Extensive knowledge in urban forestry and tree care operations, turf management, pond and fountain maintenance, irrigation, and minor construction methods. Position inspects work during and upon completion for adherence to objectives and work orders. Employee also works with office equipment and personal computers. Performs related work as directed.
