The City is seeking an energetic and skilled seasonal GIS technician to assist the City’s GIS Division of the Transportation and Engineering Department with multiple data collection and mapping projects. The employee will learn about the functions and services of a local government and gain experience in the role of GIS in a public agency, particularly as related to a typical Public Works Department.

This position is estimated at 28 hours per week and is a part-time, temporary entry-level GIS technician position. This position is expected to last for 50 weeks from the date of hire.

In addition to the responsibilities listed below, the intern may attend meetings and be assigned trainings to understand more about the role.

Essential Job Duties

  • Collecting location and other information about assets in the field using a mapping-grade Bad Elf GPS unit. Examples of assets the technician may be tasked with mapping include fiber water meters, sewer cleanouts, catch basins, and street signs.

  • Working closely with different departments and personnel within the city with varying technological skill sets.
    Entering attribute information for existing mapped features through Esri’s Field Maps app or in the office by researching old plans, building files, and other source materials along wit entering data into ArcGIS PRO.
    Documenting work in progress.

  • Based on the selected candidate’s skills and interests, there are a wide variety of other projects the technician may be tasked with assisting on to gain experience and knowledge. These projects may include:
    • Updating asset attribute information from as-built documents and other sources
    • Updating the street sign inventory using data from ArcGIS Survey123 and Lucity
    • Creating applications in Portal for ArcGIS for internal users
    • Performing basic analysis and creating maps for other city departments
    • Writing python scripts to automate processes

Selection Criteria

Prerequisite Skills:


  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn quickly.
  • Ability to communicate and work as part of a team.
  • Desire and ability to work with people with limited experience with technology.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work independently.
  • Resourceful and self-directed. Willingness to ask for assistance or clarification and to follow instructions.
  • Enthusiasm and interest in working for local government with a demonstrated commitment to service.
  • Some experience with Esri GIS software with the ability and desire to learn.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Optional Skills:
Knowledge or experience of the functions and services of local government are desired but not essential.
Experience with Bad Elf GPS equipment is desired but not essential.


The ideal candidate will have completed college level coursework in GIS, geography, or a related program. Computer skills including word processing and the ability to quickly learn new software are required. Experience reading as-built documents is preferred.
