The Public Works Laborer is under the supervision of the Assistant Public Works Director. Work performed in maintenance and construction tasks of an unskilled or semi-skilled nature. May be required to perform responsibilities of Recycle Laborer.
EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Performs routine repetitive work as part of a crew in collecting garbage and other waste material.
- Works as part of a construction crew in road repair, gravel spreading, ditch digging and center line stripping.
- Responds to collection problems or missed collection on residential routes.
- Helps install and repair drainage tile, mix concrete and assist sign division.
- Removes debris from street right-of-ways and other City property.
- Operates and cleans light equipment such as weedeater, mower and leaf blowers.
- Rakes leaves from City right-of-way, cemeteries and other City property.
- Performs ground maintenance and grave maintenance in city cemeteries.
- Collects garbage from commercial customers not on commercial system.
- Cleans equipment, vehicles, tools and the shop area.
- Assists with snow and ice removal.
- Required to work overtime as needed.
- Perform related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of materials and equipment used in general maintenance and construction work.
- Skill and ability to use common hand tools.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Knowledge of City and department rules, regulations and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, representatives of other agencies and the general public.
- Ability to maintain a good attendance record.
- Valid Tennessee Drivers License
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience in heavy manual labor and the use of light equipment.
- Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
ADA REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements - Physical demand requirements are at levels for those of active work. Regular performance of heavier tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and working in confined spaces; lifting or carrying weights of twenty to fifty pounds and occasionally very heavy items up to one hundred pounds; may involve the complex operation of gasoline, electric or diesel-powered machinery or shop equipment requiring the manipulation of multiple controls. May work in adverse environmental conditions.
Sensory Requirements - Tasks require visual perception and discrimination including color and depth. Tasks require perception and discrimination of odor and sound.
