What You'll Do

 

As Building Inspector II / Plans Examiner, you'll be responsible for reviewing plans, conducting inspections, interpreting building codes, and ensuring construction projects comply with adopted codes and ordinances.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Review residential and commercial building plans for code compliance
  • Perform inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction
  • Issue permits and certificates of occupancy
  • Interpret and enforce adopted building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, zoning, and floodplain regulations
  • Work directly with contractors, engineers, architects, developers, and property owners
  • Research complex building code questions and provide practical code interpretations
  • Maintain inspection records and documentation
  • Recommend process improvements that enhance customer service and efficiency
  • Help ensure new development meets the City's commitment to safety and quality

 

What We're Looking For

 

Successful candidates will have a strong technical understanding of building construction along with excellent communication and customer service skills.

 

Ideal candidates possess:

  • Knowledge of commercial and residential construction methods
  • Strong understanding of adopted building codes
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Professional judgment and the confidence to make sound code decisions
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with contractors, developers, and the public
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License
  • Seven (7) years of experience as a commercial building inspector and plans examiner is preferred
  • Associate's Degree in Building Construction Technology or related field preferred

 

Required Certifications

 

The successful candidate must obtain (or possess) the following ICC certifications within six (6) months of hire:

  • Residential Plans Examiner
  • Commercial Plans Examiner
  • Commercial Mechanical Inspector
  • Commercial Electrical Inspector
  • Commercial Plumbing Inspector

Work Environment

 

This position combines office work with field inspections. Employees regularly visit active construction sites in all weather conditions and use a variety of inspection tools and technology. Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided and required on job sites.
