Under direction, provides, oversees and coordinates assigned recreation programs, activities, and operations within the Parks & Recreation Department; plans and organizes special events associated with specific recreation programs; develops, oversees, and evaluates recreation programs; supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of part-time staff, part-time temporary seasonal employees, and volunteers responsible for providing assigned recreation program services and activities; ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; and performs the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

  • Coordinates and oversees operational activities for assigned recreation programs, services and activities for various ages including youth sports, fee and charge classes, youth and teen afterschool program, senior programs, specialty classes, camps, excursions, special events, and related recreation activities.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for providing recreation services.
  • Recommends and administers policies and procedures.
  • Identifies opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures.
  • Identifies resource needs and reviews with appropriate management staff and implements improvements.
  • Coordinates and reviews the work plan for assigned recreation services and activities.
  • Assigns work activities and projects and monitors work flow.
  • Reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures.
  • Meets with staff to identify and resolve problems.
  • Recruits, selects, trains, motivates, and evaluates part-time staff, part-time temporary staff, and volunteers.
  • Provides and coordinates staff training.
  • Prepares staff work schedules and assignments.
  • Works with employees to correct deficiencies.
  • Implements discipline and termination procedures.
  • Participates in the development and administration of assigned program budget(s) and forecasts funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Monitors and recommends expenditures and recommends adjustments as necessary.
  • Plans and organizes special events including ordering supplies and equipment and contracting outside services as necessary.
  • Performs a variety of administrative duties including overseeing the program registration process.
  • Evaluates community needs and interests and ensures that facilities, programs, and activities are meeting changing needs of the community.
  • Recommends new recreation programs to meet community needs.
  • Forecasts trends and develops curriculum.
  • Promotes and develops marketing campaigns.
  • Assists in the marketing of assigned recreation programs to the community.
  • Oversees and participates in designing, preparing, and distributing publicity including press releases, brochures, pamphlets, flyers, and printed schedules.
  • Coordinates and develops monthly calendar of activities and special events.
  • Provides facility management for assigned centers including ensuring facilities are safe and properly maintained.
  • Maintains inventory of recreational equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of reports and forms.
  • Coordinates assigned recreation programs and activities with those of other programs, divisions, and outside agencies and organizations.

  • Local government organization and the functions and practices of a municipal recreation unit.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and filing.
  • Principles of municipal budget preparation and control.
  • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and supporting software applications.
  • Methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations

Ability To

  • Develop, plan, promote, and implement varied recreation programs.
  • Prepare publicity concerning new or ongoing recreation offerings.
  • Elicit community and organization support for programs.
  • Recruit, select, train, and evaluate part-time and seasonal staff.
  • Supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of lower level staff.
  • Analyze and evaluate community needs and work with community organizations in developing recreation programs.
  • Understand community needs in a variety of recreation areas and evaluate activities according to those needs.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize tasks; exercise sound independent judgment within departmental guidelines.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws, and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Participate in the preparation and administration of assigned budget.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Prepare clear and concise schedules and reports.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education And Experience

Education equivalent to the completion of high school supplemented by two years of college courses in the field of recreation or a related field. Four years experience in community and/or youth recreation or comparable setting.

Other Qualifications

Possession of a valid Class C motor vehicle operator's license from the State of California.

Physical Demands

Ability to sit, stand, stoop or bend for up to two hours at a time.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to get from one location to another in the course of doing business.

Ability to see and hear.
