The Chief Electrical Inspector performs complex professional and technical activities ensuring compliance with and enforcement of building codes for electrical system installations and repairs. Work involves reviewing building plans and inspecting residential, commercial, and industrial structures, conducting site visits and investigations, enforcing conformance to the Florida Building Code and City of Tamarac Codes, and initiating corrective actions. 

Work is performed under limited supervision with latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position seeks technical guidance only on unusual or complex problems or issues. Reports to the Assistant Building Official or designee.

Inspects residential, commercial, industrial, and other building types for permitting and during and after construction to ensure electrical systems and related components meet provisions of building and safety laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards for the promotion of public safety and welfare.

Observes conditions and issues notices for corrections to responsible parties; gathers evidence and prepares reports concerning unaddressed violations.

Reviews building plans for code compliance and permit fees; conducts associated field inspections as required. 

Receives, responds to and/or investigates complaints received from the public concerning building matters and initiates corrective actions per established regulations, policies, and procedures. 

Interprets and explains codes and regulations regarding the configuration and repair of buildings and electrical systems.

Instructs engineers and contractors in the proper installation of or use of electrical supplies or equipment to comply with codes.

Coordinates with internal personnel for internal scheduling of multiple inspections and for city projects.

Stays current on changes to building codes and applicable regulations; interprets legal requirements and recommends compliance protocols to engineers, contractors, workers, architects, and owners.

Adheres to all city and public health and safety guidelines and protocols; performs job functions in a safe manner and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures.

Maintains quality communication and interaction with all city employees, representatives from external organizations, and the public to maintain good will toward the city and to project a positive city image.

Maintains on-call work availability as assigned, to prepare for, respond to, or recover from a hurricane, tropical weather event, or other emergency to meet the city’s obligation to remain operational before, during, and after the event; duties assigned may or may not be typical of the job and are contingent upon the needs of the city and the residents because of the event.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures and meets with management staff to identify and resolve problems.

Assesses and monitors workload; identifies opportunities for improvement and implements changes.

Selects, trains, motivates, and evaluates staff; provides or coordinates staff training; works with staff to correct deficiencies; implements discipline procedures per established policies, procedures, and executive guidance.

Oversees and participates in the development and administration of the departmental budget; approves the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; approves expenditures and implements budgetary adjustments as appropriate and necessary.

Pay and Bargaining Status
This is a non-exempt position pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act and is within the blue collar bargaining unit covered by the City of Tamarac and Federation of Public Employees (FPE) collective bargaining agreement.  This position is paid on an hourly basis, issued bi-weekly, and subject to overtime pay in accordance with the terms of the current City of Tamarac and FPE collective bargaining agreement.


To be eligible for appointment as a Chief Electrical Inspector, must meet the most current applicable Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) certification requirements, which includes additional discipline-related certifications and have two (2) years of previous lead worker experience.

Required Certifications and Licenses
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver license and the ability to travel independently from one city location to another or to offsite location/s or the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required (and sponsored) according to job duties and responsibilities.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering and five (5) years of professional experience; licensed in the State of Florida as Professional Engineer (PE).

The City of Tamarac is a drug-free workplace.  Recommended candidates must pass a pre-employment drug screening prior to appointment, as appropriate.  An eligible veteran or spouse of veteran shall receive preference in the selection process as provided for in the Florida Statutes.  To obtain veteran’s preference, a candidate MUST submit a copy of a DD-214, Certificate of Discharge, or Statement of Eligibility with their application.
