NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work in underground water/wastewater collection and distribution systems.
An employee in this class is responsible for performing or assisting in the performance of a variety of assignments of routine difficulty involving repair and maintenance of municipal water/wastewater collection and distribution systems. Tasks require employees to exercise initiative and independent judgment when participating in installing or repairing of any utility system.
Employees will work independently on specific assignments. The employees usually work under general supervision, receiving instructions both verbally and in writing. However, for the more complicated tasks, immediate supervision will be provided. Some assignments of this class are hazardous, particularly when performing maintenance or repairs of the different utility systems.
Employee will need to understand many aspects of safety and how to maintain a safe work environment. Work is reviewed while in progress through observation, conferences and reports submitted, and upon completion through results obtained.

Field – Wastewater Lift Stations
- Operates various classes of vehicles including trucks, large trucks (with or without a trailer), dump trucks, backhoes, frontend loaders, mini-tracks, forklifts, generators, pumps, bobcats, and other standard motorized maintenance and other construction equipment as necessary in order to complete a repair or maintenance task.
- May be required to assist in the operation of vactor trucks for field applications, as necessary.
- Keeps all equipment and vehicles clean and in proper working order and identifies any damage or repair needs.
- Organizes, tracks, and properly documents work performed in the field and updates the supervisor on system status.
- Ensures work is clean and work sites are tidy in accordance with supervisor expectations.
- Ensures vehicles and equipment are inspected and in proper working order.
- Ensures lift station are in proper working order.
- Observes and monitors semi-skilled and unskilled work assignments, as required.
- Performs manual labor requiring knowledge in specialized disciplines of facilities and field maintenance and construction work.
- Follows safety procedures and promotes a safe work environment.
- Orients, guides and trains subordinate technical personnel in proper procedures and safe methods for performing work assignments.
- Performs general preventive maintenance of water, reuse, and wastewater facilities, infrastructure and appurtenance.
- Assists in the system repairs, and services pressurized and gravity systems.
- Maintains, repairs, and services mechanical equipment, pump rails, wet wells, pump bases, valves, and piping in lift stations and any type of sewer lift, pumping, repumping, or booster stations and tracks repairs in an organized manner using standard forms and/or electronic devices.
- Tracks pumps that are removed from and reinstalled at different lift stations or in the warehouse.
- Tracks and documents the location of portable lift stations to ensure they are properly fuel and functional.
- Maintains station sites in a clean and orderly manner and ensures that landscaping is properly trimmed and maintained in and around all lift station sites.
- Assists in the performance of minor electrical work associated with lift station maintenance and when necessary, coordinates with the supervisor, planner, or designee to request assistance from the electricians for uncommon minor electrical tasks.
- May be required to provide support and assistance to the Field - water or inflow and infiltration division.
- Reads atlases, GIS maps, schematics, maps and performs pipe and valve locates, as necessary.
- Documents discrepancies when field data does not coincide with atlases or plans.
- Follows safe excavation practices and safety measures and complies with safety requirements.
- Prepares accurate and complete daily documents for work performed, daily vehicle inspection checklists, and up-to-date work order information as necessary to depict the work performed and any additional work requirements not identified on the work order.
- Uses printed work orders, electronic work orders, and/or verbal work orders to complete assigned tasks and jobs.
- Troubleshoots water, wastewater, and reuse systems and equipment.
- Sets up adequate maintenance of traffic (MOT) controls when work in the rights-of-way is required.
- Notifies supervisor or designee when equipment needs to be replaced or repaired.
- Attends mandatory safety training.
- Assists in the investigation and resolution of sanitary sewer lateral line blockages, main line blockages, and may respond to customer complaints.
- Assists in identifying and locating inflow and infiltration issues.
- Monitors semi-skilled and unskilled staff and labor engaged in the performance of maintenance, repair, and adjustments to utility system infrastructure and appurtenances. Supports others to ensure that work is completed in a proper and complete manner.
- Responsible for the proper completion of crew field assignments and activities.
- Responsible for the operation of semi-skilled labor activities when part of a crew or team.
- May provide assistance to ensure that third party vendors and service providers working on utility systems are in compliance with specified requirements.
- Identifies and corrects common causes of system failures; assists in the preparation of sketches for system layouts and installation and communicates system needs in written form.
- Responds to emergencies and other criticalities.
- Participates in a mandatory stand-by rotation as scheduled by the Field Operations Supervisor or designee.
- Ensures compliance with material and equipment inventory tracking policies and requirements.
- Tracks the location of portable lift stations, the fueling of portable lift stations, and pumps as well as other infrastructure and equipment assets.
- Reads, documents, and understands SCADA system alerts and pump operating times. Uses the information to make determinations for repairs and/or troubleshooting of lift stations, booster stations, and pump stations.
- Performs general manual labor work, documents information, and performs routine tasks without being asked.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED equivalency diploma
- Education supplemented by special courses in mechanical maintenance and repair, preferred
- PROOF OF HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- One (1) year of fulltime paid experience involving preventative maintenance and repair to utility related equipment, piping, valves, hydrants and meters in a utility distribution and/or collection system;
OR
- One (1) full year permanent status as a City of Sunrise Serviceperson.
- Must have sufficient physical strength and agility to perform manual labor and operation of heavy machinery, such as backhoe and bobcat.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid Florida C.D.L. Class B with endorsements for air brakes with an acceptable driving record.
- Level 3 State of Florida Water Distribution License from FDEP in Maintenance of distribution systems, preferred.
- Muss pass pre-employment and random drug testing as required and monitored by DOT 49 C.F.R. Part 382
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City-issued technology devices.
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, manual or power tools.
- Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and/or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements.
- Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to work outdoors under varying temperatures, inclement weather and/or other adverse conditions.
- Ability to load, carry, lift, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate a motorized vehicle.
- Ability to climb and descend stairways and ship ladders at unusual heights of up to 40 feet.
- Ability to hear within normal audio range, with or without correction.
- Ability to see in the normal visual range with or without correction. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to withstand exposure to the following conditions without stress: excessive noise, unpleasant odors, chemicals/other environmental substances , blood borne pathogens.
- If applicable: Perform work at locations with exposure over, in and around water, which may not be accessible to the physically handicapped.
- Some knowledge of standard tools, methods, materials and practices utilized in the field of mechanical technology.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions, including those encountered while working near high voltages.
- Ability to interpret and work from technical sketches and plans as well atlases; locate, define and repair defects in system failures and equipment.
- Some ability to plan, layout, install, alter, repair, and maintain collection and distribution system.
- Ability to work in sanitary manholes and wet wells.
