- Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, mowing tractors, front end loaders, dump trucks, truck mounted attenuators, patch trucks, combination (vactor/jetter trucks), miscellaneous tractors, motorized graders, bulldozers and other equipment to clear or grade land, load trucks or assist in road repair work.
- Receives instruction and trains in the use of various equipment as time and workload permits.
- Performs street repairs which include demolishing and excavating concrete, back filling, grading, setting concrete forms, pouring concrete, and finishing concrete, building storm drains and manholes and any other concrete as needed.
- Digs out, prepares, and places asphalt for pothole repair or patching.
- Digs/rakes/grades by hand, uses power hand tools including string trimmers, pole saws, chain saws, jackhammer.
- Provides landscaping services.
- Assists in setting up work zones and flags traffic.
- Mows with push mower, zero turn, tractor mower or side arm cutter.
- Puts down chemicals and salt during ice and snow conditions on streets.
- May be responsible for some landscaping as required.
- Picks up litter, debris, and animal carcasses within the Right of Way.
- Performs other related work as required
Knowledge of the operation, capabilities, and limitations of motorized heavy equipment used in the City Public Works Department. Knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions associated with the operation of heavy motorized equipment. Skill in the safe and effective operation of a variety of heavy motorized equipment used in public works construction, maintenance, and repair activities. Ability to perform routine inspections and minor maintenance on heavy motorized equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation. Ability to read and interpret work orders, requisitions, diagrams, schedules, and written or oral instructions related to assigned work. Ability to prepare and maintain basic records such as work orders, time cards, and equipment reports using prescribed formats. Ability to apply logical and practical problem-solving skills in completing assigned tasks and interpreting a variety of instructions. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including the ability to explain procedures and exchange information with supervisors, coworkers, and other personnel. Ability to use and understand common mechanical and automotive terminology related to equipment operation and maintenance. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Ability to inspect equipment, materials, and work areas for proper measurements, condition, and safety compliance. Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color as required for equipment operation, safety markings, and material identification. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and others encountered in the course of work. Ability to exercise sound judgment, compare observable characteristics of equipment or materials, and make appropriate operational decisions. Ability to work effectively in adverse weather conditions, unpleasant environments, and under physically demanding conditions with minimal supervision. Ability to interact with others beyond giving and receiving instructions and adapt to varying levels of work-related stress.
