Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and innovative City Planner to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our community by developing comprehensive plans and programs for land use, economic development, and transportation. This position requires a strong understanding of urban planning principles, excellent project management skills, and the ability to analyze data to inform decision-making.
Major Duties:
- Manages and supervises planning and building operations and department to achieve goals; plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments, trains, motivates, and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed.
- Provides leadership and direction in the development of short- and long-range plans; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations.
- Reviews and issues permits requiring ordinance compliance checks.
- Directs the development and management of the city’s geographic information system (GIS).
- Partners with developers, landowners, and the Sturgis Economic Development Corp (SEDC) to facilitate growth and drive community development efforts.
- Facilitates cross-departmental input to resolve issues and concerns that emerge in the planning and development process. Coordinates with colleagues at the county and state government levels.
- Analyzes requests for development approval and prepares written recommendations and reports for Planning Commission and City Council action on annexations, zoning changes, conditional use permits, variances, subdivisions, final plats, tax increment financing, etc. Serves as a technical advisor and staff liaison.
- Responds to questions from the public concerning city planning and zoning codes and policies; interprets codes and policies for the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field; urban planning, regional planning, community planning, land-use planning, urban affairs, or a closely related field.
- Three – five years of progressively responsible planning experience in urban or community planning, including two years in a supervisory or management role. Some portion of the experience in a government-related position.
- American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP) certification or obtain within 12 months is desired.
