Sworn Law Enforcement position which involves the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, reducing the fear of crime, enforcement of laws, investigation of crimes, traffic accidents and other police related matters, apprehension of those who violate laws, maintain order and provide assistance and needed services to the public.

Note: Candidates to start immediately upon passing pre-employment background and testing with an anticipated official start date Mid-June 2026. Candidates that are certified or certifiable as a police officer are preferred.  Lateral transfer candidates are encouraged to apply.  Lateral transfer based on years of experience, education and additional skills to determine rate of pay and vacation eligibility with approval of the Chief of Police and Police and Fire Commission. Eligibility list will be established.
  • Patrol an assigned sector of the City on foot or by conveyance assigned.
  • Enforce traffic laws, issue citations, warnings or other action concerning violations.
  • Direct traffic.
  • Investigate traffic accidents and road obstructions.
  • Report conditions of streets, signs, curbs, sidewalks, obstructions of signs, signals or vision.
  • Take appropriate action on matters affecting public safety.
  • Employ problem-solving strategies and behaviors.
  • Provide assistance to meet the needs of the community.
  • Investigate wanted / missing persons and property.
  • Investigate crimes and citizen complaints.
  • Search for and preserve evidence.
  • Search for and apprehend violators.
  • Transport persons in custody.
  • Conduct interviews and interrogations.
  • Prepare reports.
  • Prepare cases for prosecutors and present testimony.
  • Serve warrants and legal documents.
  • Conduct security checks.
  • Represent the Department at various public functions as assigned.
  • Assist co-workers in their duties, particularly during absences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Age 18
  • US Citizen. 
  • No felony or domestic violence convictions.
  • If Veteran, proof of honorable discharge. Copy of DD214 required.
  • Vision 20/40 corrected.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, in a clear manner using appropriate grammar and spelling.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license without restrictions or with correctable restrictions.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle under normal and adverse conditions while maintaining the ability to communicate and activate the equipment in the vehicle.
  • Residency required in accordance with labor agreements.
  • Ability to provide credible testimony in court.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously with others.
  • Pass physical and psychological examinations as required for sworn positions.
  • Free from physical, emotional or mental conditions which might adversely affect performance of duties as a police officer.  Must be physically capable of performing duties to include, but not limited to, firearms, defense and arrest tactics, handcuffing, physical restraining, pursuit of suspects under adverse conditions, emergency rescue, delivery of first aid, operating police vehicles and communicating effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lawfully possess firearms.
  • Must be able to perform all competencies required by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Training and Standards Bureau for certification as a police officer.
  • Applicants need to be certified or certifiable as a Police Officer. An officer in Wisconsin is certifiable upon completion of the Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Academy Program (720 hours).
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent .
  • Obtain 60 college credits within 5 years of employment.
  • 60 college credits from a university, college or technical college.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in the use and maintenance of all Department equipment.
  • Practice principles and procedures of modern policing.
  • Understand and apply Department rules, regulations, policies, directives, procedures and job descriptions.
  • Understand and apply federal, state and local laws pertinent to the delivery of municipal police services.
  • Know the geography of the community.
  • Interact courteously with all levels of supervision.
