Responsible for a variety of construction, maintenance and repair assignments involving the use of specialized tools and equipment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. Minimum Education and/or Experience:
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to respond to spoken words, to receive and understand information, and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for assembly or fabrication of parts at/or within arm’s length, operation of machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Working Conditions
The employee is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, vibration, noise, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, oils, cutting fluids, and hazards including work around operating machinery, uneven surfaces, and narrow or confined spaces; employee may be required to wear a respirator or mask during certain circumstances.

- Performs a variety of heavy manual work in connection with the repair, maintenance, and construction of city’s infrastructure.
- Acts as lead worker on projects.
- Operates front end deck mowers, turf tractors, backhoes, dump trucks, and jack hammers.
- Assists in ground and building maintenance.
- Operates, maintains, and repairs departmental equipment.
- Assists supervisors in training, planning and organizing work.
- Organizes and sets up daily work assignments.
- Assists with the installation of trench shoring equipment.
- Follows all safety policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Experience:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Six (6) months of experience in maintenance, repair, and/or construction work.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license, or any valid driver’s license with ability to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair tasks.
- Thorough knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power.
- Thorough knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, city officials, and the general public.
