About the Position:

The City of Stanton is seeking a motivated and dependable Public Works Maintenance Worker to join our Department of Public Works team. This full-time position performs a variety of maintenance, repair, and operational duties supporting the City's water and sewer systems, streets, parks, cemetery, and other public facilities. The ideal candidate is a team player with a strong work ethic, the ability to operate equipment, and a willingness to work in all weather conditions and respond to emergencies. The position participates in an on-call rotation and responds to emergencies, including water and sewer system repairs, snow and ice events, and other public works emergencies. The City is committed to employee development and will provide training for the successful candidate to obtain Michigan water and wastewater operator certifications within one (1) year of employment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of maintenance, repair, construction, and operational duties related to the City's water distribution system, sanitary sewer collection system, streets, parks, cemetery, public buildings, and other municipal facilities.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of vehicles, heavy equipment, power tools, and hand tools in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Assist with the installation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer infrastructure, including responding to utility emergencies.
  • Perform grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, landscaping, tree maintenance, and cemetery upkeep.
  • Conduct street maintenance, snow and ice removal, sign installation, and right-of-way maintenance.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to City buildings, equipment, and facilities.
  • Respond to emergencies and participate in after-hours, weekend, holiday, and on-call work as required.
  • Maintain accurate records, complete assigned work orders, and comply with all applicable safety policies and procedures.
  • Provide courteous and professional service to residents and the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Works or their designee.

Qualifications:

  • Must reside within 30-minutes of Stanton for emergency call-outs (on-call is rotated between staff).

Experience/Education

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license with the ability to obtain a Michigan CDL (Class B with air brake endorsement) within one year of employment.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment and power tools.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions.

Licenses/Certificates

  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Possession of a Class B CDL with air brakes or be able to obtain in 6-12 months.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, one of the Michigan drinking water or wastewater operator certifications required by the City within one (1) year of employment and the remaining required certification within two (2) years of employment.
  • The City will provide and pay for required training, testing, and licensing for employees who successfully complete the program requirements.
  • Employees receiving City-paid CDL training may be required to sign a training reimbursement agreement. Employees who voluntarily separate from employment within twenty-four (24) months of obtaining their CDL may be required to reimburse the City for a portion of the training costs.

Pay: $17.00 - $22.00 per hour
