To ensure the safety of patrons utilizing the swimming pool facilities at Alf Sorenson, Deer Park and the Sparks Marina; provide surveillance of swimming area, surrounding deck areas and bathroom/locker room facilities; instruct swimming lessons on an as needed basis.
You have either enrolled in an instructor-led or blended learning lifeguarding class. If you enrolled in a blended learning class, your instructor will provide directions to access and complete your online session.
At the beginning of the first in-person session, your instructor will verify your identity and age and conduct a prerequisite swimming skills evaluation. The prerequisite swimming skills evaluation will vary based on the lifeguarding certification course you are taking. It consists of swimming, treading water and a timed swimming event. See the table below for specific details.
Swimming
Successfully complete the two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations:
Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
- Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Job Information

Qualifications
Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications to continue in the recruitment process:
Licenses and Certificates
Must be able to possess within thirty (30) days of hire and maintain throughout employment, a valid Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certificate
Must be able to possess within thirty (30) days of hire and maintain throughout employment, a valid Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid Certificate
Must be able to possess within one (1) year of hire and maintain throughout employment, a Red Cross Waterfront Certification for Marina Lifeguards
Examples of Essential Duties
Thoroughly understand and enforce all pool rules, policies and procedures and educate patrons about facility rules and regulations. Communicate clearly and effectively with citizens and program leaders about issues or concerns; communicate with the public and represent the City in a professional manner.
Complete written accident reports, incident reports and any other reports as needed. Identify hazards and immediate risks that might compromise the safety of patrons. Provide general cleaning and maintenance of the pool facilities. Follow oral and written instructions.
Participate in in-service training and skill assessments; remain current on safety practices and procedures by attending meetings, training and safety programs. Assist in teaching swimming lessons following Red Cross protocol as requested. Handle various medical emergencies.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Make sound decisions and use appropriate judgment during emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required and other duties which may be assigned.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Reading, writing, basic math and verbal communications skills
- Lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques
- Facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures
- Special needs of physically handicapped and non-ambulatory children including their requirements and characteristics; basic discipline and behavior modifications techniques
Physical Demands:
Must be physically able to lifeguard the pool which requires manual dexterity and sufficient strength and stamina to perform sustained physical activity such as bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; walking and standing for prolonged periods of time; lifting equipment and materials weighing up to 60 pounds; requires ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; must be physically capable of performing aquatic rescue and first aid.

- This is a temporary position; this is not a Civil Service position and is non-exempt under FLSA guidelines
- This position reports to the Recreation Supervisor, their designee or Head Lifeguard

- Must pass a detailed background investigation and drug test; must pass a pre-employment swim test
