The City of South Pasadena is seeking motivated Firefighters eager to attend paramedic school and become Firefighter Paramedics!

Under general supervision, responds on emergency and non-emergency calls to fight fires and perform rescue operations; trains, drills and works in fire suppression and fire prevention activities; repairs and maintains fire apparatus and equipment; and maintains quarters.Responds to emergency calls for medical and fire aid; drives fire vehicles to the scene of emergencies; performs emergency bandaging and splinting, and other medical procedures as prescribed by law; performs in a full range of firefighting duties in the suppression of structural, brush and other types of fires; participates in regular training activities, and fire prevention inspections and programs; may act as Fire Engineer ; and performs related work as required.
Education/Experience
Candidates shall be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
All Candidates MUST Have
Arithmetic, principles of mechanics, elementary chemistry; modern firefighting techniques and problems; basic English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition.
Ability To
Perform emergency first aid, including C.P.R.; respond quickly to changing situations under emergency pressure; climb ladders and work at considerable heights; use tools and equipment; perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining firefighting and rescue vehicles; appropriate safety precautions and procedures; and understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Physical Demands
Exposure to extreme physical demands would require the candidate to be in excellent condition. This includes, but is not limited to, lifting and/or dragging of heavy weight, bending, stretching, stooping, squatting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, running, jumping, pushing, pulling, twisting, and other forms of moderate to extreme physical exertion.
Special Requirements
Possession of CPR and EMT I certificates.
Incumbents in the Firefighter Paramedic Trainee classification are eligible for promotion to Firefighter Paramedic upon meeting the minimum qualifications with a satisfactory work performance evaluation. Employees must qualify for promotion to Firefighter Paramedic within 36 months or may be terminated.
During the period of the trainee appointment, the trainee shall have probationary status. Appointments to the higher classification are subject to a new probationary period.
Working Conditions
All Fire Department personnel work under extreme conditions that require excellent physical conditioning.
FLSA Status
All Fire Department personnel who work 24-hour shifts fall under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

- Certificate of completion of California State Fire Marshal's Office accredited fire academy, or California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I certification.
- Proof of passing the Biddle or IAFF CPAT within the last 12 months
- A valid California or National Registry EMT Certification.
- Firefighter Restricted Class C Driver’s license as issued by the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles.
- 911 experience as an EMT
- College coursework related to Fire Science
- Paramedic School prerequisite courses such as Anatomy & Physiology
