 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate front-end loader, single and tandem axle trucks, manual transmission semi-tractor and trailer, biosolids spreader, horizontal grinder, roll-off truck, and screen machines.
  • Skillfully use handheld tools and equipment.
  • Maintain records of tonnage, loads, acres, and fields applied by biosolid spreaders.
  • Assist with other departments in the removal of snow in City streets and alleys.
  • Load customers' vehicles with materials.
  • Maintain safe work areas and physically clean equipment. Remove materials on and from under equipment using various hand tools.  
  • Change screen on equipment.
  • Interact with co-workers and the public with tact and diplomacy
  • Maintain a positive attitude and consistent performance
  • Manage time, make sound decisions and work independently
  • Follow directions and relay work progress in an effective manner
  • Follow safety procedures, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Operate two-way radio
  • Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as apparent or as assigned

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, safety rules, and memos
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to customers and other employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods under adverse field conditions
  • Knowledge of crew practices, basic safety and traffic rules and regulations.

·  EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  •  Prefer high school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Two years of experience in heavy equipment operations
  • Must provide own tools and maintain adequate tools to perform job functions

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

 

  • Must attend and pass heavy equipment safety class within 30 calendar days.
  • Must have valid Driver's License.  Must have or be able to obtain within 60 days

    • Class A Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake endorsement

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear.  The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.  The employee must frequently climb ladders on equipment.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or push/pull up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required in this job include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment will be primarily working outside in various weather conditions (extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, snow, etc.).  While performing the duties of this job, the employee constantly works near moving mechanical parts and in all weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to cold or heat and humidity, fumes or airborne particles and vibrations. Exposure to oil and grease, solvents and other chemicals, bio-solids, compost, and dust. 

SCHEDULE: 

Monday - Friday, 8 hours per day

May vary with season/operational needs, overtime as required.

REQUIRED:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Driver's License to start
  • CDL within 60 days
  • Pre-Employment Drug Screen
  • Background Check
  • This is a safety-sensitive position, subject to random testing for drugs and alcohol in accordance with City policy.
